Am I brave enough to wait until after the birth?

DH and I have struggled sooooo much with boys names that we are completely back to square one! Neither of us like the names that each other have shortlisted and I have recently gone off the name we compromised on after having tried it out for a few weeks.

DH is suggesting that we wait until after the birth and if it's a boy we cross the bridge when we come to it. However, the fact that we have a girls name sorted has made me start to wish for a girl which I know is dangerous territory Sad

Is anyone else struyggling with this or am I being a control freak by wanting to have a name in the bag in advance? I'm also secretly hoping that if it's a boy, DH will be magically won over by one of my favourites!

I'd suggest to him maybe trying to sort a shortlist of 5 names you both like and then see if they suit him when hes born, if it is a boy that is!

It's fine to wait, with me apparently my mum & dad had a name all organised but when I was born they took one look at me and went 'nahhh, doesn't suit her' and came up with something new.

Similar situation here. DC2 due next week and the girl's name has been sorted for a few months. We both like different boys' names and can't agree. We have one that is ok, but I was really happy with DS1's name and don't want this baby to have something that is only ok.

I have decided to take your DH's approach and see what happens if it is a boy. I am fed up of thinking about it. With DS we were the opposite: quite happy with or boys' choice and really ambivalent about the girl's name. I am wondering whether it is a sign that this baby will be a girl.

we had a similar situation and it was horrible!

when ds3 was born and was, quite clearly, a boy we had a really bad few weeks of him having no name, us arguing over names, me being all hormonal and tearful about it....
dp ended up giving in and letting me have the name i wanted, i ended up feeling guilty and 18 months down the line i'm not that happy with his name

When I was in hospital after having dd we were the only ones that had a name it seemed the majority waited until a few days after the birth to decide.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 02/11/2010 14:31

DD1 is now 6 days old and still nameless......

bundlebelly · 02/11/2010 15:07

Neither of my babies had names until they were three days old. Get to know them first and see what they feel like!

ellesabe my DH is the same. We are all sorted with pink names but super stuck on blue names...! Not even one, whist I have loads. He too wants to wait.

You are not a control freak and i think it's wise to have at least 1 or 2 names written down. However (she says....) i'm sure when you meet your baby you will think of something perfect, doesn't matter if it takes a few days. Wink

Exact same situation here. Have had a girls name for months but cannot agree on a boys name.

We have both given up suggesting any and are hoping the situation will sort itself out Grin

I am a control freak and would want it pretty much in the bag. If I had not done this with dd1, I know I would have called her something totally different in my postnatal haze and would have regretted it ever since. I wouldd at least narrow it down to two or three. Good luck!

littlemisslozza · 02/11/2010 21:32

We had a shortlist (well, about 10 names of each gender) when both DS's were born. We waited to see what he looked like on each occasion and could choose a name that seemed to suit him! Both decided within 12hours after birth, no regrets.
