DH and I are struggling with boys' names. Any thoughts on these and also what nicknames could be used for Cedric and Balthazar?

I like William

randomimposter · 30/10/2010 21:29

Only like William of your list...

But Ric or Ed? Ali maybe?

Sorry..

sophiesmummie · 30/10/2010 21:40

Definately not William imo. The little William in dd's class gets teased with Willy a lot Sad.

I quite like Cedric Smile.

rachel234 · 30/10/2010 21:43

Cedric is fab. Balthazar is a nice name, but I can't think of any nice nicknames. I'd also avoid William due to the obvious Willy associations (and little schoolboys will make that connection Grin)

Suncottage · 30/10/2010 21:48

I nannied for a little Cedric - no nickname though. I also know a Eadric - known as Eddie

Guacamole · 30/10/2010 21:49

I love Wilfred... but no way would my DH have ever allowed me to name our DS Wilfred. I've got a bit of a thing about Wilfred Owen's poetry and when I suggested Wilfred or Owen he rolled his eyes and told me not to be ridiculous! I didn't want to call him Wilfred Owen Guacamole just one or the other Grin!

I'm afraid I can't think of any nn for Balthazar (unless maybe Bart?).

poppydaisy · 30/10/2010 21:52

I like Cedric a lot - classic, masculine and not overused.

Not sure about Balthazar (seems a bit long), and I'd probably avoid William and Wilfred due to the Willy teasing potential.

MelinaM · 30/10/2010 23:35

J'adore Baltahazar! I've a cousin with this name, we call him Balthy for short!
Not a fan of Cedric I'm afraid but that's just me, William's nice, ^ love Wilf! x

diddl · 31/10/2010 07:21

I love Balthazar-with William as a middle name!

tummytickler · 31/10/2010 07:41

Balthazar is fab - it is one of the few dh and I agree on, but the lack of nn puts us off. Somebodyon here suggested Zolly whichis cute, but a bit too close to Ollie!
I also love Cedric, dh hates it.
Others are a bit dull.

William for me. It was a potential name for our DD had she been a boy.
You could get round the willy by calling him Bill.

LaDiDevilDiDie · 31/10/2010 10:00

I like them all but don't know of any nns that I like for Balthazar.

Think I would go for Wilfred or Cedric.

meadowlarks · 31/10/2010 12:08

I like all of them, but especially Wilfred or Cedric. Both underused imo. I know a Cedric who's known as "Ced", and I also happen to know a little Godric, but that'a a different story altogether...

Catzenobia · 31/10/2010 16:59

Thanks all - DH now most keen on Cedric and me on Balthazar so we'll see what he looks like when he comes out (due end of Dec)...

Cedric and Balthazar are both lovely. I too know a Balthazar known as Bazzy.

PortBlacksandsDoppelganger · 01/11/2010 13:30

"I also know a Eadric - known as Eddie"

Me too Suncottage. Where abouts do you live (you needn't be too specific), there can't be many of them.

tammytoby · 01/11/2010 17:04

I like Balthazar, nickname Balty or Bazzy. Cedric is nice too.

I'm not keen on the Will- names due to the obvious Willy association.

rachel1970 · 01/11/2010 20:05

I like them all, but prefer Cedric.

rosie17 · 01/11/2010 20:18

Balthazar is brilliant. He might be nicknamed Bazza but I still love it!

Clary · 01/11/2010 21:19

Balthazar to William is quite a leap!

William is a lovely name but there is one in every class round our way. None are ever called Willy to my knowledge. A mate of DS1's is Will, he is about 5ft6 tall (at 11yo) and looks about 16; I wouldn't dare call him Willy! (he's a lovely lovely boy as well).

I have never ever ever ever met anyone called Balthazar. I think there may be a reason....

I quite like Cedric but IIRC it means "blind" which may put you off? Wilfred I also like, Wilf is rather cute.

FlyingInTheCLouds · 01/11/2010 21:29

balthazar sounds pompus
Cedric is very drippy
William and Wilfred are ok.

lilly13 · 01/11/2010 21:32

I only like William from your list. The rest sound too ancient to me. Sorry

lottiejenkins · 01/11/2010 21:50

I have a gorgeous Wilf (mothers bias ) He is named after Wilfred Owen! Guacamole you have good taste!!

Cortina · 02/11/2010 16:42

Love Cedric, very cool and very French. Balthazar is a bit too Jude Law set trendy for my liking.
