Any opinions on Ezra?

DP really likes it. I'm worried it'll sound a bit too 'jewish' though, and that people will make assumptions about ds's background.

We've also been asked 'isn't that a girl's name?', but as far as I know that was just the enquirer being easily confused.

We were going to call ds2 Ezra, but then he turned out to be dd. I think it's a fab name, and I think of it more as chapel Methodist than Jewish. I was also quite keen on the writings of Ezra Pound when I was a teenager, although he was a fairly terrible person in many ways.

gillybean2 · 26/10/2010 04:46

Isn't Ezra the name of the female baddy in the emperor's new groove?

Ok googled it and she was spelt Yzma. An awful lot of Jewish stuff came up on google first though..

randomimposter · 26/10/2010 10:48

I really like Ezra. Always a boy's name IMO.

GruffaloSoldier · 26/10/2010 10:53

That is the name we will be using for DS2 - we love it!

GreenStinkingStumpSleeves · 26/10/2010 10:58

sounds more Puritan than Jewish to me, culturally

but really, these days, I don't think many people will make those connections, they will just think he is called Ezra

I like it, personally

bundlebelly · 26/10/2010 11:16

I like it too. Definately boys name. Suggests someone sensitive yet strong to me. Creative.

RockinSockBunnies · 26/10/2010 11:18

My Jewish friend is called Ezra. I love the name. The only problem he has with it, is that many people mishear the name and say, 'oh, you're called Israel'. Maybe it's because he has an American accent. Nonetheless, very good name.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 26/10/2010 11:25

Reminds me of the poem about Ezra Pound who was lost at sea and never found.
I like the name though.

Ryuk · 26/10/2010 14:41

Cheers kreecher! [hhmm]

Thanks all, though. We've got a couple of months yet anyway, but I am starting to warm to it.

I love the name Ezra! We were toying with it as a name for DS, but decided against it as it doesn't fully go with our surname.

Even though DH and I liked it, every time we mentioned it to anyone they did Hmm or Confused faces. Really annoyed me!

Minione · 26/10/2010 16:34

Love it! One of my fave names!

Sarsaparilllla · 26/10/2010 16:56

I like it, although I would assume it was a girls name, I guess it can be either

LynetteScavo · 26/10/2010 16:57

I like really it, but I met a read haired freckly boy called Ezra, and I didn't think it suited him.

Faaamily · 26/10/2010 18:47

Love it.

freerangeeggs · 26/10/2010 21:07

Hate it, sorry.

FluffMacDuff · 26/10/2010 22:40

I read somewhere that David Baddiel's son is called Ezra.

To me it seems less Jewish and more new media / frontier in style. The spelling makes me just a bit too girly for me. Prefer Levi, Noah or Asher.

mathanxiety · 26/10/2010 23:25

Lovely name, and I have the same impression as Nooka (chapel Methodist in the UK context). Sounds like a 1700s name to me, like Josiah Wedgewood.

WillowFae · 26/10/2010 23:59

Definitely Jewish. It's one of the books in the Old Testament / Torah.

nooka · 27/10/2010 06:00

It's Old Testament, which means that it can/will be used by both Jews and Christians. I can perhaps confess that we (partly) got the idea from watching very old episodes of Emerdale Farm - the pub landlord (Amos) had a ne'er do well brother Ezra. They were chapel.

We have a puppy called Amos now Grin

ClimberChick · 27/10/2010 06:15

Love it

WillowFae · 27/10/2010 09:20

Yes, it can be used by Christians as well as Jews, however I would say that it is a Jewish name as the Old Testament was a Jewish text before Christianity existed.

twolittleflyingmonkeys · 27/10/2010 09:24

I love it. Before I MCd that was my favourite for a boy.
