Totally lost my way with baby girl names

Hi ladies,

Wondered if I could have some opinions? I am 40+2 so any help would be much appreciated!!

I am really struggling to choose a name for our baby girl.

We have ruled out all names ending in an 'i' or 'y' sound (such as Julie or Emily type names), but also all names that are commonly shortened as such (e.g. Amanda to Mandy) as they sound really silly with our surname, which is Italian and also ends in an 'i'.

Our current faves are:-

Carmen
Ava (loved this, but now worried by how many babies are being called this)
Evelyn/Eve
Eva (same reservations as Ava)
Paige

In the running for 2nd names (all family names)
Lillian
Francesca
Rosina

Does anyone have any opinions or other suggestions? I am open to anything !! What do you think of Carmen?

Scarlett Francesca

My dd's middle name is Paige. It was originally on our shortlist of christian names. I must admit, I am glad we didn't call her Paige.

Eva/Ava/Evie very common arounf here. Carmen is quite nice, if you don't think of Carmen Electra.

BelligerentGhoul · 22/10/2010 16:12

Like Evelyn and Paige best of the fisrt list and Lillian from the 2nd. Dp wanted Paige for dd1 but he has a Brummie accent so it sounded awful!

Silkstalkings · 22/10/2010 16:57

LOVE LOVE LOVE Carmen!

Vanillacandle · 22/10/2010 17:00

I also like names that can't be shortened - my fave is Grace, but not sure that would go with your second names. However, it would be a nice second name if you had Lillian or Francesca or Rosina as first names.

Also like Serena, Rowena, Lucia, Isabella, Octavia (all to go with Lillian, or you'll have a lot of "a"s!)

Or try Carmen, Charlotte, Helen, Megan, Isobel, Amy with Francesca or Rosina.

I think a 2-syllable first name sounds more balanced with Francesca as a second name.

Like thesecondcoming, I really don't like Paige.

i LOVE Lillian and Francesca. Also Ava. i think it did get a bit popular, but i haven't heard many recently

what about Delfina?

Carmen... don't like that much, don't actively dislike tho

RockBat · 22/10/2010 17:03

Rosina is beautiful

Don't like Paige either, at all

MummyB2010 · 22/10/2010 17:06

I have thought a bit about Carmen Electra... but was associate it more of the Opera called Carmen tbh. but a few people have said 'oh like Carmen Electra' so will give that some thought

Like KenDoddsDad suggestion of Estella and TheSecondComing Anna, but DH has vitoed Anna as 'too boring'. Shame coz it's really pretty imo.

Have taken on board the comments about Ava, Eva, Eve etc, which confirms my own reservations tbh. shame

Also loving Scarlett ExpectantNo3

Steering clear of Elena, Evelyn etc as too similar to my own name.

Thank you very much for your input everyone. Much appreciated.

Anyone else associate Carmen with Carmen Electra? If so, do you think that will wear off given as she's got to be in her 40s by now :o

i jut thjought of the opera

Bue · 22/10/2010 18:39

Carmen is lovely and will sound like a breath of fresh air when she's surrounded by all the old lady names that babies have these days! C. Electra didn't even cross my mind.

Scarlett does have a similar feel but is v v popular right now.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/10/2010 18:49

Carmen makes me think of that sitcom Bread from years ago, but I'm probably alone in that.

Dislike Paige.

Silkstalkings · 22/10/2010 19:03

Opera and a couple of very nice Spanish ladies I've known.

mathanxiety · 22/10/2010 19:16

Ava Rosina would be beautiful. An alternative to Ava might be Aveline?

Carmen Francesca.
Eva Lillian.

I really dislike Scarlett. It's a name for an Irish setter. Scar is a horrible sound to incorporate into a name, imo.

Carmen is gorgeous, timeless, and brings back good memories of one from school. Breath of fresh air is spot on. Carmen Electra is old, not as old as me, but OOOOLD.

HeadFairy · 22/10/2010 19:18

Carmen is nice, are you Italian? How about Chiara, my fave girls name of the moment - wish I'd called DD Chiara - she's a Francesca instead.

GivesHeadlessHorseman · 22/10/2010 19:21

Love Carmen and Francesca, hate Paige, love Evelyn and all its derivatives, but it is VERY common now. Also like Lillian, but only if it isn't shortened to Lily or Lil, which it will be.

cece · 22/10/2010 19:32

Carmen Francesca sounds lovely.

How about?

Cleo
Althea
Genevieve

yummymummie1 · 23/10/2010 17:09

Love Carmen

DinahRod · 23/10/2010 17:18

Carmen is nice, Rosina mn territory only, love Anna, Ava & Francesca although Ava rather popular. Lilian is also pretty but like Evelyn/Eve might get shortened to Lily/Evie which you want to avoid.

Definitely no to Paige.

pootros · 25/10/2010 07:09

Carmen is great! Wish it went with our surname!
Also lourdes, paloma- but those are a bit Spanish rather than Italian.
