What's the surname. If it's 'Smith' it will sound a bit odd.

Umnitsa · 20/10/2010 14:18

Love it and considered for DD. My problem with it was the difference in pronunciation: in my native Russian it is Ksenia whilst in English the first letter is pronounced as Z.

Beautiful name though!

I love it, I knew a Xenia, she pronounced it Exania.

maktaitai · 20/10/2010 14:30

I like it but after 6 years on MN would struggle to use it myself Grin What does it mean?

Fink · 20/10/2010 14:38

It's a Greek word which doesn't translate very well into English. Whenever we had to do translations at school the nearest equivalent was 'guest-friendship'. It's to do with the concept of owing hospitality to anyone who comes to your house, village etc. It's not very common in English culture but think of the stereotypical Italian granny force feeding you and some random friend you've unexpectedly brought home more pasta as a sign of love and you're kind of there!

Reminds me of Xena, Warrior Princess. Not particularly a bad thing, but its not the name for me, sorry! Ksenia, from Umnitsa, is better.

GreenStinkingStumpSleeves · 20/10/2010 15:16

it's ok

prefer Xanthe

sandyballs · 20/10/2010 15:19

No as it reminds me of a rather strange Mumsnetter.

BuntyPenfold · 20/10/2010 16:04

I know one Xenia aged 4, it is pronounced Zennia.
I never heard any adverse comments, only requests to spell it.
I know a Ksenia too age 4 and I hadn't realised it was the same name.Blush

It was one of our shortlists for DD but ended up going for another Russian name with a lovlier meaning!

mathanxiety · 20/10/2010 17:18

Love it, but I would use the Russian spelling and pronunciation. Otherwise it might look a bit sci-fi.

Best friend has this name - it's fab & so is she. She's got an Irish surname that starts with a Mc. It works very well.
