Laurie or Silas?

I put it to you

Silas is a great name.

Laurie sounds feminine - too close to Laura/Lorelei etc. I also have a French friend called Laurence in her 30s.

I vote for Laurie.
Although it does sound like Lorry.
But gorgeous for a little boy. Not sure about a big hunky manly man though.

Agree with previous posters about Silas being a bit old agricultural and sullen.
But if you love a name, you go for it. Don't listen to us!

I have a girl Laurie and she would've been Laurence...still Laurie effectively! Bloody wonderful name.

I love Laurie for a boy, quite common in Scotland. Silas is not my cup of tea, i'm afraid

DS is Laurie as nn - have never had any comments about it being girly . I think it is only a problem in America (def a girls name there!)as there are lots of boys I know called Laurie now.

Those of you who know Lauries - may I ask whereabouts (generally) you live? Is it a Scottish thing?

Silas for me. But, perhaps because I know one and he is a beautiful, clever and very funny man.

I really like Silas. Laurie is too feminine imo, as is Laurence.

DH just said 'Laurie' sounds like 'lorry' and Silas reminds him of something to do with farming, he's thinking silage

Kwini - we're in the West Country and I know 5 boys called Laurie including my own DS.

Laurie Lee is a local hero so is definitely not a weird or female name here!

I must admit that some people are looking around for a large articulated truck when I shout his name in the park!!
