Joseph or Jake???

Hi there,

Looking for baby names for my 2nd boy. My first boy is called Oliver which I love so want something that goes well with that. I like Joseph Benjamin and Jake Benjamin but can't decide - what do you think? Also what is a good nickname for Joseph should I decide to go with that as not too keen on Joe. Does Josie as a nn sound too girly? Would Joel be a better nn?

whilst we are on the subject of baby names - do you not think that seeing as us women have to endure 9 months of pregnancy (and in my case 6 of those months were spent with constant sickness and a week in hospital on a drip) and then child birth on top of that, that we should get to make the final decision on the baby name? Ok part of me is laughing as Im writing this but the other half of me is serious. Am I being unreasonable?? LOL :-)

i agree we should get to pick (and in a way i do see it as MY name and i'm just running it past dh lol),but if he really didnt like a name i couldnt call ds it as i can just imagine dh saying it through gritted teeth lol.My mum didnt like Charlie as a name before he was here but now she'll admit she can't imagine calling him anything else!

pinkyp I like Joseph William out of the 2.

Josie is cetainly a girl.

Oliver and Joseph go well together and are both nice names.

Be aware tho that you will meet many many other Joes/Josephs and yr son will have another in his class most likely. But then that's true of Oliver too so they are a good match.

Jake is also popular; I personally prefer Joseph.

Yes I do really love Joseph but my only concern was that i don't want him to become a Joe when he is older which is why am trying to find a nice/different nn, think so far Im liking Joel and Jay??

Joel is a name, not a nickname for Joe.

If you like Joel call him that.

Ditto Jay, more of a nickname for James, or a name of its own.

Or call him Joseph and just do that. I know a Thomas who is never Tom, because his family never call him that.

Like both, prefer Jake as like short names for boys.

JellyKat....you and I obviously share the same great taste on boys names LOL... how old is your son? I think Jake is a lovely name.

I have a 13 year old Jake who is very pretty, sporty and popular. He likes his name because no one ever gets it wrong, it is 'normal' without being everywhere and it's kind of a cool name.

(I have to say though, that among his age group, 'J' names are really common - Joe, Josh and Jack being the most popular.)

Sleepyhorse .. My Jakey boy is actually 22 on Christmas Eve. Yeah Merrylegs-It IS a cool name!

I don't like either particularly, and I don't think that they travel well into other languages. But if I had to choose, I'd go for Joseph.

thereisalight - just looked up your link of Josey Wales....much better way of spelling it. Im liking it!!!!! I agree Josie does sound a bit girlie (its listed under Joseph in my name book though so thats what confused me)

So really happy now, not only have I decided on Joseph but also found a lovely nn, Josey should we ever decide to shorten it.
