When did you start choosing baby names?

I'm 19 weeks, so not had my 20 wk anomaly scan yet (in fact it's not til 21+6). DH is very keen to start looking at names. Maybe it's because I'm in the paranoid run up to scan stage, but it feels a bit early...!?

We chose names on our honeymoon, 3 years before DD was conceived.

We are now talking about names again and don't plan to start trying until January.

Have fun! ;-)

Jux · 30/09/2010 20:59

We had names sorted long before I was pg. I took one look at dd and knew the girl's name we'd chosen was wrong! Took us weeks and weeks to choose another.

WetAugust · 30/09/2010 21:04

2 days after each DS was born

DastardlyandSmugly · 30/09/2010 21:21

About 6 months after we got together...which was 15 years before DS was born Grin

BessieBoots · 30/09/2010 21:22

When I was about twelve...Wink

mamasunshine · 30/09/2010 21:22

Pretty soon after we'd found out the sex at 20 week scan! Both dc's suited the names we had chosen perfectly. 24 wks pg with dc3 and chose a name after scan again. If it didn't suit I would just think again after, but hoping again the name will be perfect again Smile

FunnysInTheGarden · 30/09/2010 21:25

just after my 20 week scan with both DS's. Up to then I couldn't really believe I was going to have a baby! ie not miscarry!

Haliborange · 30/09/2010 21:26

with DD1 I started keeping lists after my 20 week scan (before then it was vague conversations).
DD2 was named before she was conceived. It took a while to get her so I had lots of time to think!

CharlotteLER · 30/09/2010 21:51

I started to look for mine after my 20 weeks scan then gave up and didn't decide until after she was born! It then took me another 2 weeks to come up with a middle name and choose between me and my partners last names..some call me slow. :)

splatt · 01/10/2010 09:47

bought a book of names after 20 week scan.
We are now 90% certain (38+3) we know what he/she will be called. Have 2 girls names and 1 winning boys name but are still going to wait to meet him/her before we make absolute choice.
It's proven to be very difficult!!!!

CuppaTeaJanice · 01/10/2010 09:53

I decided when I was eight that my son would be called Silas. Didn't seem like such a good idea when I did become pregnant.

Now I'm starting to think about boys names, even though I'm not due until next May! Largely because there aren't any boys names I like so I know it will take ages to find one. Girls names are easy - I like loads of those!!

MamaLazarou · 01/10/2010 09:53

When I was very small.

DetectivePotato · 01/10/2010 10:16

Our name for our (future) DD (21 weeks atm) has been picked out for about 8 years.

DS's name was picked about half way through last pregnancy. I like to be prepared.

RuthChan · 01/10/2010 11:25

We chose two names while I was pregnant the first time, one for a girl and one for a boy.
DC1 got the girl's name, DC2 got the boy's name.
We chose DS's middle name after he was born though.

pinkgrasshopper · 01/10/2010 15:48

Thanks everyone! We did have a first go in the end last night. We individually wrote names on post-it notes and took turns in selecting them, the other could veto any which were an outright 'no'- the entire Wimbledon FC 1988 Cup Winning team went very quickly...!!

Turns out we have no idea about boys names, but as we are planning on finding out the baby's sex, all being well, at the next scan we'll worry about it when we have to...(I'm convinced it's a girl anyway!!)

I was at that cup final PGH :o

I picked DD's names in primary school. They are the opposite way round to what I had intended but they're both there :)

bobs · 01/10/2010 15:51

DD1 - the day she was born. DD2 - 5 days after she was born - got it down to a shortlist then picked out of a hat Blush - I'm normally really organised...really I am Smile

pinkgrasshopper · 01/10/2010 16:27

Well, Rockbird, the 1988 squad name is marginally better than another of DH's suggestions which was 'Danny Kedwell Wimbledon's Number Nine'- in reference to AFC Wimbledon's current captain/star striker! Our friends call my bump 'little womble'...Wimbledon football is a bit of a full time obsession hobby in my household!

Just the other day...and we've only just started TTC.

PaulineCampbellJones · 02/10/2010 20:15

Had my girls name for about 10 years. Was really stuck for a boy so good job I had a DD.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 02/10/2010 20:17

As soon as I realised I was pregnant. And we found out the sex both times so that we could decide on the name well before the baby was born.

SnailWhaleTail · 02/10/2010 20:29

With number1 child we had picked a boys name (in the certainty he would be a he) when I was 5 weeks pg. 5 yrs on we are still really pleased with the name and it really suits him.

With number2 child, again we had no idea of sex but had discussed it endlessly and chosen by the timeI had my section at 39 weeks. The name for a boy was all wrong when we saw him and it took a few days to re-choose the 'right' one.

scottishmummy · 02/10/2010 20:46

we picked dc name when i was pg.kept schtum.told no one

Meglet · 02/10/2010 20:48

As soon as I knew I was pg. DS was given the name we thought of in the first week of me being pg.

DD was given the name we would have called DS had he been a girl.

lovechoc · 02/10/2010 21:03

at around 20 weeks preg both times.
