For a boy

I really love the name, but I dont want to be appear to be trying too hard IYSWIM

It would be teamed with a classic middle name like Henry or Samuel

Hm. I'd find it a bit odd if someone introduced their son as 'Roman'. I don't see it as a name tbh, I see it as a bit like calling your child 'Russian' (I do know it's a proper name though).
I think it could be seen as trying to hard, but I think you could pull it off depending on surname. If your surname is 'Smith' or 'Jones', definitely not. If you have an Eastern European or otherwise unusual name... maybe.

I think of Roman Abromovich and Roman Polanski.

I'd imagine someone called Roman to be masculine and successful.

For me and my hubbie, it just wouldnt work, but it may suit you and your family?

belgo · 30/09/2010 09:59

Yes.

Call him Norman instead. Far more original.

I don't get how anyone can 'try too hard' when naming their baby. It is an important decision, so I'd say we should try very hard Smile.

I like Roman, and people will associate it with your sone once he's here. It is classic, timeless and easy to spell/pronounce in most languages.

sophiesmummie · 30/09/2010 10:46

I think Roman is a perfect boys' name - classic, timeless, simple, not overused and pronouncable in most languages. Great choice imo.

(Did Posh & Becks really name one of their son's such a nice name?)

Sidsmam · 30/09/2010 11:01

I know a Romain. He is French hence the spelling but it sounds the same. :)It really suits him. NOt sure it would go with our family like pp said but it may well yours!

Lovely name. Don't think ghe Beckham's have a Roman and don't get the 'try hard' thing either... Confused.

diddl · 30/09/2010 13:41

Roman?
I think it´s lovely.

Try hard?-well, it´s not exactly unheard of/obscure/made up, is it?

ZZZenAgain · 30/09/2010 13:42

to me Roman is not posh

bigbluebump · 30/09/2010 13:57

I think Roman is a great name - traditional, classic and simple.

Don't understand the 'trying too hard' issue, nor do I associate it with the Beckhams.

LiquoriceLila · 30/09/2010 20:24

I quite like it, Posh and Becks have a Romeo, not Roman. Cate Blanchett has a son Roman and she's pretty classy imo

Chynah · 30/09/2010 22:28

Roman is DSs middle name - I love it!
