Right, DP and I are TTC. So I know this may seem astronomically early to be discussing names but if you knew how polarised our tastes were you'd understand that the sooner we can work something out the less torturous this process has to be.

Basically, for a boy, we both have really set ideas of what we want. I like posh more traditional names and he prefers more common straightforward ones that are generally shorter. So, as a compromise we'd like a longer name that can be shortened easily. So far, we like:

Augustus nn Gus
Bartholomew nn Bart
Walter nn Walt
Algernon nn Algy
Wilfred nn Wilf
Jeremiah nn Jem

However, there are exceptions to this: I have a massive Italian name fetish and I love Nero (yes, really), Jacopo, Raphael and Giuseppe. The problem is, we're not Italian in any way and fear it might look odd on an English kid. We also like Vere (a family name on both sides), Cuthbert (my granddad) and Alban.

For girls, we both think Julia's beatiful (think Diana Quick in Brideshead Revisited) but maybe a little common. We also like Astrid, Elizabeth and Minerva.

Any suggestions/comments would be welcome!

Haliborange · 27/09/2010 19:24

Leonora = yes
Beatrix = dominatrix

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 19:34

Halibo - Haha. I'd never thought of that.

Well, even though it seems like Elias is clearly the most popular, I worry that if DC1 is anything like me and DP then he wouldn't be cool enough to carry it off. The fact that we love the name Cuthbert should tell you something about our street cred. Grin

Boys' names are clearly still an issue, but we think we might have cracked the girl's name; Julia Leonora Astrid. Any thoughts?

I'm a Julia.... Have never met another one Hmm

Haliborange · 27/09/2010 19:47

I do know two baby Julias if that's an indication it is becoming more popular. Of course, they live on opposite sides of the world so it is hardly an overpopulation of Julias...

nannylocal · 27/09/2010 19:48

I like Wilf and Raphael, but the others are a bit...unusual. I know a couple of Elias' and they don't have super trendy parents. What about; Albie (Albert),Henry or Percy?

I like Julia, but Julia Leonora Astrid might be one of those kids who dies of embarrassment when her middle names are accidentally read out at school...

NomDePlume · 27/09/2010 19:53

Astrid is too good to be relegated to middle name status, imo.

belgo · 27/09/2010 19:55

Julie/Julia/Juliette have been consistently popular names for a while, I know several of all ages from a baby to middle aged.

SoLongAsItsHealthy · 27/09/2010 19:58

With the exception of Minerva Hmm, I also hope you have a girl. Your boys names are truly awful.

belgo · 27/09/2010 20:02

Meadowlarks it seems I am in the minority, I have any problems with the names, (apart from Walter and Algernon which are terrible)

I even quite like Cuthbert. And Minerva is lovely.

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 20:02

nannylocal - I have a friend called Albert so I can't use that, Henry's nice but a bit popular for us and Percy's way too poncey, even for me.

NomDePlume - I do like Astrid but I prefer Julia.

OK. I'm ready for a thrashing but if we were to go with Elias for a first name, how does Elias Cuthbert Vere sound? Bear in mind that the MNs would be for sentimental value, even if they aren't exactly fashionable.

Julia Leonora Astrid is absolutely gorgeous.

Of your boys' names I love Algernon and Jeremiah.

Suggestions:
Urban
Alban
Theodoric
Hector
Stanislas
Cyprian
Thaddeus
Conrad
Clement
Ludovic
Leopold
Ivo
Julius
Matthias

ApocalypseFlangePop · 27/09/2010 20:09

URBAN ??!! Shock

mathanxiety · 27/09/2010 20:09

Elias Conrad Vere
Elias Alban Vere
Elias Cuthbert Vere

I like it. Cuthbert is a name that has grown on me since reading the 'Nicholas' series by Goscinny and Sempe.

belgo · 27/09/2010 20:10

Engelbertus. I came across an ancient Engelbertus recently.

mathanxiety · 27/09/2010 20:11

Urban is an old Latin name; twas the name of several popes.

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 20:12

mathanxiety - Phew! Thanks. I too love Algernon but everyone just looks at me like I've just announced I'm calling my child Turdface. I like Clement, which could be shortened to Clem, too.

I'm glad Cuthbert is growing on you - I feel it's one of those underdog names that needs to be rescued from obscurity. Plus, I met one once who got called Cuthy and he was so effing cool!

belgo - LOL.

OP posts:
belgo · 27/09/2010 20:15

Ludovic, nn Vic.

minipie · 27/09/2010 20:22

Elias = good, though what would the (inevitable) short form be? Eli?

Vere = quite cool as a middle name

Cuthbert = please, please, please don't. Cedric is a MUCH better alternative.

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 20:28

minipie - Would Elias inevitably have a NN? I would have thought people could manage it. Also, Cedric is horrid and since it is not my grandfather's name it is not exactly an alternative.

OP posts:
BelligerentGhoul · 27/09/2010 20:29

Love Bartholomew but Bartie not Bart.

Haliborange · 27/09/2010 20:34

"Cedric is horrid" - says the woman who came up with Minerva! (Sorry, but I have snorted pesto all over the screen)

I knew a male Meridith once. Go on, call your baby Meredith regardless of sex!

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 20:34

BelligerentGhoul (love the name by the way!) - Yes I do like Bartie but I thought it would be inevitable that people would call him Bart.

OP posts:
SherbetDibDab · 27/09/2010 20:34

I like Walter, Augustus and Wilfred from you boys list and I do also quite like Cuthbert.

There's also Gilbert nn Gil or Bertie.

I also think Julia's lovely.

Good luck with agreeing on something.

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 20:39

Sherbet - Gilbert's one we considered but since everyone who knows me knows I'm a huge fan of CSI, I didn't want people to think I'd named by kid after Grissom.

loobylu3 · 27/09/2010 21:16

Augustus nn Gus- a bit ott- I like August though
Bartholomew nn Bart= love Bartholomew but not sure about Bart.
Walter nn Walt- okay
Algernon nn Algy- I actually like it but I'm sure I will be the only one!
Wilfred nn Wilf- nice
Jeremiah nn Jem- dislike this
I also love Raphael.

I like Julia, Leonora and Astrid!
Minerva is okay but will be associated with HP.
Elizabeth is classic and always will be.
