Oscar? Giuseppe? Nico?

Boys names are ridiculously hard hence my new user name.

Harrumph. We are arguing incessentantly and I am bored of it now. I don't have that long to go either.

My dh has always loved Oscar. I have never been quite so keen, partly because we had a cat called oscar when i was a kid but partly because I hate Ozzy as a nn.

My helpful mother told me when i was pg with dc1 that she would shorted oscar to ozzy.

Hence Dc1 is called Luca. Not oscar.

Anyway now i am pg with dc2 and we don't know if it is a boy or a girl. We are fairly sorted with girls names (but that can always change with the next row) but the boy thing just isn't happening.

What goes with Luca? We have italian, english, spanish and random other cultural bits in our family so we are pretty open to most things but it does need to sound ok in english and italian.

I do like oscar more than I did but don't love it. We both like Otis but don't have the guts to use it.

I love joseph but dh thinks it is too different to Luca. I think the italian equivalent (giuseppe) is nice but too hard to spell in the uk.

So what do you think about
Oscar Joseph
Nico Joseph
Joseph Nico
Giuseppe???

I don't want matteo, luciano, marco, massimo, stefano, pietro, juan, giovanni, enzo, davide, jesus (yes really), alessandro, lorenzo, ricardo because of family names.

I also can't use Jacob, Jack, Alfie, James, william, jonathan, frederick or thomas because of family/friends on my side.

Help! Any other ideas?? What do you think of Oscar etc??

Thank you

I love Giuseppe. Reminds me of Pinocchio!

Jago is not Italian of course, but it would 'go' with sibling Luca. As would Bruno, Hugo or Milo.

What abut Arnaud? Links in with the o trend but it's got a European flavour.

I like Enzo and Pietro too. I've no Italian connection and I considered one of these names. I just like European-sounding but still classic solid names.

meadowlarks · 27/09/2010 18:20

I really don't like Oscar personally, and if you don't like the shortening then I wouldn't use it.

Your other names: I LOVE Giuseppe. Love it love it love it. And I think most people here know how it's spelt. I also like Nico but it's quite popular. Joseph is also nice and you should consider the fact that your children, though related, are individuals who will live separate lives and no one past the age of 13 will be classifying them as a pair.

boysnamesarehard · 27/09/2010 19:20

OK, I didn't expect a big yes to giuseppe. Do you think people will generally get it ok? He will have to spell out his surname already so i don't want it to be too complicated.

Also, do you like Zep as a nn?

Thx!

I have an Oscar.
He couldn't have been named anything else.
He's called Oscar by most people. Sometimes Oz.
He's sooo cool.

thisisyesterday · 27/09/2010 19:25

Nico is fabulous. ds3 was very, very, very, very nearly Nico

pigindisguise · 27/09/2010 19:30

Another fan of Giuseppe here too, and Zep is cute.

claricebeansmum · 27/09/2010 19:30

IMO Nico is girl's name - 'twas singer in Velvet Underground.

iskra · 27/09/2010 19:34

I love Nico. I like Guiseppe (I didn't look to see if I can spell it so please excuse if spelt wrong!) but I love the nickname Zep for it, that's a massive plus point.

Bicnod · 27/09/2010 19:34

I have an Oscar. He gets called Oscar-poo quite a lot by me, occasionally Osc if I'm feeling lazy, but never Ozzy. Not by anyone. It just hasn't come up - everyone just calls him Oscar.

I also had a cat as a child called Oscar. I didn't name DS after the cat (honestly!) and everyone in the family raised an eyebrow for 2 seconds when they heard what we'd called DS, but it really hasn't caused any problems. It's actually quite funny to pretend I did name him after the cat...

mathanxiety · 27/09/2010 19:58

I like Giuseppe too. And Oscar. Surely Oscar has too much of an S sound to lend itself to Ozzie as a nn?

I like Ruben and Gabriel too.

sparkle12mar08 · 28/09/2010 08:03

Nico is gorgeous and goes perfectly with Luca.

Italophil · 28/09/2010 15:11

I would be very careful with Giuseppe. My husband is called Giuseppe and the spelling (and pronounciation for that matter) is wrong almost every single time. I don't think it is as commonly "accepted" as other Italian names, as eg Francesca, Luca, etc.

It is a traditional name but I am afraid I would find it "too" Italian if you live abroad.

mathanxiety · 28/09/2010 16:05

Salvatore
Rocco
Stefano
Vito
Lorenzo (love this one)

hatebeak · 29/09/2010 09:33

Nico wasn't (Velvet Underground And)Nico's real name - that was Christa. Nico was a nickname derived from a man's name...

yummymummie1 · 24/10/2010 15:46

I love Giuseppe and Oscar, both really nice.

diddl · 24/10/2010 18:23

Oscar is lovely 6 your mother needs a slap-how bloody rude!

Oscar Joseph is a really lovely name.

Rhubarbgarden · 25/10/2010 07:45

Love Nico. Oscar is a long-dead cat to me too.

lennon80 · 25/10/2010 18:37

Otis is cool! Be brave!

Boys names are VERY hard. I have at least six girls names I like and two I would definitely choose but I am having a boy! You cant really do 'cute' names with boys in the way you can with girls which makes it so much harder.

minipie · 25/10/2010 18:44

I love Nico and think Nico Joseph is fab and works perfectly with Luca.

Wouldn't do Giuseppe unless you are very, very Italian. And it's very different from Luca in "style".

deliciousdevilwoman · 25/10/2010 22:09

Nico definitely! It's a cool name and one we seriously considered before we knew I am expecting a girl. I first heard an American couple call out "Nico" to their gorgeous 4 year old when I was on holiday in Capri last year, and loved the name instantly.

beaditAli · 26/10/2010 22:59

Ditto! I loved Nico as a name but my DH just wouldn't have it. His ideas were horrendous!
Nico isn't a girls name traditionally...... it's a boys name. And a great one at that!
Our best friend is called Joseph and we call him Giuseppe all the time. In a very endearing way. You could still have Joe as a nn?
I also really like Milo though have known 2 cats with this name.
God luck with choosing! I ds on Sept 20th and didn't decide on his name until a week before! Smile

FluffMacDuff · 26/10/2010 23:05

Nico is very cool! Or Piero? Cosimo?

cumbria81 · 27/10/2010 10:15

Oscar is awful.

Nico is an abbreviation

Giuseppe is a little strange

Mitchymum · 28/10/2010 21:40

Reuben or Hugo.

boysnamesarehard · 01/11/2010 12:58

Oh wow, thanks for all the help! Jury is still out but good to get the feedback.
