I would be grateful if you could help me and my DP choose a name. Which one do you prefer and why?

My DD2 has the middle name Fleur. Thinking of Martha as middle name for DC3 if its a girl.

So obviously I like Martha better than Florence, but love Fleur too Wink

Martha does seem to be coming out as the more favourable name. Is it due to the popularity of Florence this past year or the nicknames? Hmm

Martha just makes me think of Martha Stewart of housekeeping/perjury fame. Florence may be popular due to Florence and the Machine - but it's so old fashioned. I agree that Fleur is a pretty name, but these two suggestions are just burdensome.

Scarabeetle - what kind of name would you suggest that is opposite to "burdensome"? -all suggestions gratefully recieved Wink

I love both - I used to live next door to an old lady called Florence and she got called Florrie, which I also like. DS has a friend called Martha who is lovely.

If I was to have another DC (which I am not!) I would definitely consider one of those. Although I am very keen on what people call old lady names. I also like Violet, Edie, Constance (Connie), Maisie, Elsie.

I love both but Martha is my favourite, it was my 1st choice for dd2 but dh hated it.

Jojay · 26/09/2010 22:04

Martha

Clary · 26/09/2010 22:25

Like both. DS2 was going to be Florence Agbes or maybe Agnes Florence.

I like Martha too but it doesn't go with our surname. I know just maybe one or two of either so both pretty unusual.

Clary · 26/09/2010 22:26

Agnes not Agbes sorry.

I know a few Florences and none of them gets called Flo. If you don't want that as a nn, people won't call a Florence Flo. Later she can choose, and if she doesn't answer to Flo people won't call her it!

I like Florence and Martha - both lovely.

smother · 27/09/2010 11:31

Both lovely - but I would go for Martha as lovelier!

crazybutterflylady · 27/09/2010 14:57

I love Florence... sadly we called our cat it and I am gutted now! We love it because there are so many NNs: floss, flo, flossie

Martha is on our listtoo, another gorgeous name. How about Martha Florence? :)

flopsy1974 · 27/09/2010 17:28

I have a ten week old Martha Alice and we love her name. People on here keep saying it is popular but I do not know or have ever known a Martha. We have had nothing but positive comments about her name and most people comment on how unusual it it. Where I live most baby girls are called Olivia May and Lily May (they have no imagination). It may ofcourse depend on where you live but I think the mumsnet version of popular is a name that makes it into the top 100.

I like both your name choices but prefer Martha (obviously). Other names that made it onto our shortlist were Rosa and Beatrice.

smother · 27/09/2010 17:37

hello Flopsy - I remember when you were deciding!! and I agree, your DD's name, Martha Alice, is beautiful.

IngridFletcher · 27/09/2010 17:39

My DD is Martha and her best friend is called Florence!

Flossiebelle · 02/10/2010 22:22

We ended up going for the name Martha Felicity-Rose in the end. Thanks for all yor feedback and suggestions Smile
