....can anyone tell me officially how popular Violet is?! Everyone I mention it to says 'oooh, but it's very popular' but I have never met one, baby, toddler or teen. I can stomach top 100, but not top 50 I don't think.

Fancy a two syllable middle name with the emphasis on the second syllable (like Marie, which has been vetoed for a silly reason) if anyone has the sort of brain that can work with that brief .

Anyone feeling bored?

According to this, it wasn't in the top 100 in 2009. I think Ruby and Scarlett are increasing in popularity though, perhaps Violet will follow?

Personally I have never met a Violet... and can only think of two from other sources (both in books).

It's a pretty name but I don't think it's particularly popular. I only know one and she is in her 30s - haven't met any little Violets. I think a couple of celebs picked the name for their babies recently so maybe that's why people think so?

It's quite hard to think of 2 syllable names with a stress on the second but how about:

Violet Renée

Has anyone seen the list of ALL given names in 2009? It lists all the first names as well as the number of children given each name.

I think Violet is lovely and it doesn't seem that popular either .

OP - just a warning that even if you choose a name outside the top 100, your child may still have another one in his her class.

I know a little girl (4) with an unusual name (not in top 100) - in her class there is another girl with the same name.

Violet is nice, I'd use it if you like it.

Violet is lovely. There are 2 in my tiny village, one a few weeks old, the other 3 years old. I don't get a sense that it is massively common in the wider world though.

You should be aware that the BBC is launching a new Just William series (starring Outnumbered's Daniel Roche). I don't know the actress (Isabella Blake-Thomas)playing Violet Elizabeth Bott, but you may want to steer clear of names which easily lend themselves to being corrupted to Violet Elizabeth.

Hopefully will put people right off the name!

I love Violet and it was always my chosen name for a daughter. Unfortunately I married a man who's surname begins with V, and Violet just sounds comical with it, so we had to go with something else. I think there are a few around but not loads, so I'd say go with it.
