Hello, me and DP are having trouble deciding on a name and have got to the stage where we're over-analysing each one on our shortlist for pros and cons. We've now lost all perspective and don't know what to think about any of them. Crazy!

Please could you help us out with your comments on our list and tell us which you would pick. Ta!

Girls
Beatrice
Thea
Jasmine

Boys
Albert
Frederick
Jasper
Casper
Benjamin

Beatrice- dd's middle name so I obviously love it
Thea- Well the excellent singer Thea Gilmore comes to mind, so yes I like it
Jasmine- Nope, she would waft about with the Isley Brothers swelling to a crescendo behind her

Albert- love it, is a family name of mine and I love Albie and Bertie as nn
Frederick- another family name and I like it
Jasper- Nice but quite 'now'
Casper- Should be Caspar and is cool
Benjamin- Fine but not as nice as Albert or Frederick

'Try hard' just means that it sounds like the sort of name that is picked for its associations as opposed to the merits of the name on its own terms.

And Thea probably doesn't fall into that category anyway. Grin It's a lovely name.

It's more Fred and Mary Bloggs calling their children Ptolemy and Araminta because there's an outside chance they could win a scholarship to the local private school and they want them to fit in when really they want a Jack and Emma. Try hard.

I like Theo, especially if short for Theodore (not Theobald). For some reason it doesn't sound quite as poncy, maybe because it is a lot more popular than Thea.

Obviously they're only one letter apart, but to me they are different in terms of the impression they give.

Hi,

It is such a hard choice!

Mine is still a (beautiful) Benjamin at 5 years old! He is just starting to think about becoming Ben (particularly after we made him write his name on every thank you note!). It's his choice - and that's partly why we chose a long name so he could shorten it if he wanted. Not so keen on benjy. It also goes with other names and he is near the start of the alphabet!

Love beatrice for a girl!

Beatrice - Very nice. Bea is lovely nn
Thea - Ok, but could sound a bit like she has a lisp...
Jasmine - lovely, but Disney associations.

Boys

Albert - Ok. Not keen on old man names myself.
Frederick - Great name.
Jasper - No.
Casper - No no.
Benjamin - Lovely.

So I'd pick Beatrice and Benjamin or Frederick.
