Love it. I would always pronounce it nigh oh mee unless corrected.

skidoodly · 04/09/2010 20:37

Nice, quite 70s, but nice

Remotew · 04/09/2010 20:59

It shouldn't be 70's it's in the bible and an old, not made up name.

BelligerentGhoul · 04/09/2010 21:02

Mine is Nay-OH-me. And it's about as old a name as they come!

fsmail · 04/09/2010 21:07

That is my DD's name and she is the only one in the school. It suits her (now 6) and I am still glad we chose it.

gingerkirsty · 04/09/2010 21:08

I love it, and used to know a Naomi (Nay-oh-mee) who used to be shortened to Nommi and Nomes - both fine.

fsmail · 04/09/2010 21:13

My DD gets shortened to Nayme but I have a SIL who calls her N-eye-omi and I hate that. I keep saying Nay o mi regularly but she has still not taking the hint. She has a friend called Maime and they do get a bit confused. I read that Naomi in the Bible developed a disfiguring disease and named herself Martha instead as it was not such a pretty name. (Ironically Martha was my second choice without realising the story). My DH had always wanted a DD called Naomi so we both agreed on the name.

Plus there is the gorgeous Ralph McTell song {{ this is a cover by some bloke in his conservatory but it was the best I could link to!]]

gingerkirsty · 04/09/2010 21:21

Oh erk

spler · 04/09/2010 21:22

Just for balance Grin I don't like it. Very 70s and kind of on the Denise and Fiona page. Where is it from?

spler · 04/09/2010 21:23

Oh, the bible, sorry!

Mum72 · 04/09/2010 21:24

I love it. It was the very top of my list all the way through my first pregnancy but sadly my MIL made me change my mind.

I love Nay -oh- mee. My MIL for some stupid reason could not say Nay - oh - mee, but only Ni - ome - mee - which I didn't like.

I spent several months explaining the difference but no - she just kept saying it the wrong way.

Anyway - it did my bloody head in (she does in general) and I decided I could not spend the rest of my life correcting her - so sadly Naomi was taken off our list.

I still love it. In the unlikely event I had another baby Naomi would still be at the top of my list as I have now learnt to block out the sound of my MILs voice 80% of the time.

I really like the name , i was going to call my dd Naomi, but ny sister got there first and called my dniece Naomi I am really surprised that it is not that common, because it is such a beautiful name.
I agree with those who like the Nay-omee pronunciation rather than the N-eye-omee pronunciation. My dsis MIL pronounces her grandaughters name as Now-mee.

5DollarShake · 05/09/2010 14:02

I'm not keen, I have to admit. To me, it is a frumpy, middle-aged woman's name, but I'm clearly very much in the minority!!

If you like it, go with it. :)

5inthebed · 05/09/2010 14:13

My all time favourite girls name. Would have been my DD's name, had I had a dd, but I have three boys.

trumpton · 05/09/2010 14:28

Twas my lovely mother's name and her mother's too. I bought my mum mugs with her name on for her to use in the residential home she went into . I have them both on one side to give to a little girl I know called Nay-omi when she is old enough. Lovely name.

CharlieBoo · 05/09/2010 14:35

It's a bit dull, sorry but everyone else likes it and if u like it is the main thing.

TooBlessedToBeStressed · 06/09/2010 10:35

fsmail,Naomi DID NOT catch a sickness, she was living in a foreign land, and she lost her husband and her two sons there, then decided to go back to her own people,,it is to people that she tells them to call her Mara, which means bitter because of all her misfortunes,

TooBlessedToBeStressed · 06/09/2010 10:37

i think just like all the names out there, some will like it and others won't,whats important is if you like it,and if you do,then go for it,we are glad we named our DD that for she carries it well.

chaya5738 · 06/09/2010 11:40

Tis my daughter's Naomi and we absolutely love it. I am often surprised at how uncommon it is given how beautiful it is.
