If it is a boy. We are really struggling for a boy's name that we both like and this was dh's latest gem Shock

I like names like Arthur and Ted, and also Cassius.

Are we ever going to find a name we agree on? We have a girl's name planned, but if it is a boy it will be our third boy and we really struggled finding a name for ds2 let alone this one!

Divorce him immediately.

It's a girl's name.

lifeas3plus1 · 02/09/2010 20:09

It's a nice name.....

For a girl.

FWIW I LOVE Cassius but dp doesn't.

Wallace · 02/09/2010 20:10

I know American boys called Dakota. Mostly born late 90's. Never heard of it being a girls' name but maybe that will put dh off Grin

oh, i love dakota, but didn't know it was used for boys.

DilysPrice · 02/09/2010 20:11

It's a nice name.....

for a US State!

Arthur is nice. Ted is not a name, it is a (nice) nickname for Edward (which is also nice).

Give DH a large cup of tea, and a box set of Ripping Yarns.

Ineedsomesleep · 02/09/2010 20:13

Could you get him to agree to Arthur Edward Dakota? That assuming that telling him its a girl's name hasn't put him off!

lifeas3plus1 · 02/09/2010 20:13

Dakota Fanning

Actress. Been in films like Man on Fire and War of the Worlds.

Hopefully it will put him off if he knows it's a girls name. lol.

Wallace · 02/09/2010 20:17

Can't use Arthur anyway as hadn't realised it was the name of one of David Cameron's sons til recently and we already have a ds that shares a name with one of Tony Blair's sonsHmm

Anyway dh doesn't like Arthur anyway, and as you say Ted is short for Edward which we don't like. And I think dh feels the same way about Ted as I do about Dakota...

another female Dakota

AngryPixie · 02/09/2010 20:23

Ted is a gorgeous name, and can stand alone.

Albert (Albie) ??

MummyLovesSadie · 02/09/2010 20:24

What are your other boys names to give us an idea of what kind of name you like?

Dakota is a bit of a dumb name imho! Grin

A1980 · 03/09/2010 09:57

Dakota isn't a name at all for boys or girls.

I found this:

DAKOTA: Baby name books claim that this is a Sioux name meaning "friend," but it is not. It is the name of a Sioux tribe, and no one within the tribe is called "Dakota" for their first name, as this is not culturally appropriate. It also does not mean "friend." It is a plural noun meaning "the allies." Naming your child this would be like naming him or her "Frenchmen."

PYT · 03/09/2010 09:58

It's horrible for a girl, let alone a boy!

mysteryfairy · 03/09/2010 10:08

DC's Arthur isn't actually known as Arthur though as he goes by his middle name.

Arthur is a great name - I don't think you should let the mild DC connection put you off.

I instantly think girl when I hear Dakota.

I really liked Orlando for a DS for Virginia Woolf reasons til DH pointed out to me that people might think he was named for theme parks and tacky holidays at which point I went off it quite quickly. It would be better than Dakota though and maybe a meeting point between you and DH's tastes?

NiceCuppaT · 03/09/2010 10:32

Theodore nn Ted?

Dakota is a no personally, for either sex.

NiceCuppaT · 03/09/2010 10:33

P.s love Cassius!!

ValiumSingleton · 03/09/2010 12:37

You have to link him that clip of the australian pair, the chasers I think they are called. Put the chasers in to you tube, and look for name chasers. HILARIOUS. They go around giving fines to people who've given their children silly names. One of the names is Dakota.

ValiumSingleton · 03/09/2010 12:38

If I were going to do crazy names, I'd say that for a boy you have to use Daktari (lion).

daisystone · 03/09/2010 17:59

Oh dear! it's as bad as Georgia or Savannah. Shudder.

mathanxiety · 03/09/2010 18:15

It's horrible, and completely naff in the US, where naff isn't a word, but the concept is.

DilysPrice · 03/09/2010 19:57

I'd be scared that a baby named Cassius would fail to thrive "lean and hungry look" etc. But I do realise that that is not a sane reason to disapprove of a name.

MollysChambers · 03/09/2010 19:59

Great song though!

fivecrazymonkeys · 03/09/2010 22:44

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

CarmenSanDiego · 03/09/2010 22:47

My friend has a son called Dakota who is very sweet, but they're American. I tend to think names that end in 'A' are female in most languages so it would cause confusion.

mumatron · 04/09/2010 09:24

my dp loves this for our dd due in dec. i just don't like it and especially not for a boy.

then again my dp has the worst taste in baby names ever. fact

i have a friend with a detroit for a ds and family members with a montana, a jersey and a brecon. all dd's.

will be staying away from the place names i think.
