How important is the meaning of a name...Cameron

Hi,

We are having a baby boy in November and really struggling with names. There are quite a few that I like and some that my DH likes, but generally not the same ones! Except, possibly, Cameron but I have found out that it means "bent or crooked nose"!!! This has put me off somewhat. Am I being silly? The other name we both quite like is Ryan. Neither of these would be my top choice though as I really like Liam, Leo and Jaspar but, alas, DH does not.

We also have a DD called Rosie.

Please let me know what you think of Cameron and Ryan. Any other suggestions would also be gratefully received!

I don't think meaning is everything if you like the name.

I do like Cameron more than Ryan.

My son is named Cameron. If you search this forum for Cameron you will see that a gaelic speaker says it actually translates to "crooked hill".

That aside, my Cameron is likely to end up with a crooked nose anyway (like mum & dad Wink given that he's likely to follow our hobbies; horseriding and rugby! Grin

Thanks SkiHorse, crooked hill is much nicer than nose!

Thanks for all the suggestions, MentalFloss, I like James and Owen too, particularly, but think Cameron is the front runner at the moment. Possibly Cameron James, has a nice ring to it!

Watch out with Cameron James. People may assume it's a homage to film director James Cameron. Just a heads up!

Cameron is a nice name. I think the meaning is quite quirky and not too bad :)

I don't think the meaning of a name matters.
My names mean princess and bitterness!! Can't say it affected my life!

I'm not sure if the meaning matters or not !Blush

My eldest's name means "brave warrior", and was chosen just because we loved the name, but turned out to be apt as he was born at 30 weeks and spent his first 4 months in various hospitals.
My middle child's name was also just because we liked it, but had 2 middle names for his Grandads', which turned out to be heart-breaking because I had a placental abruption at 26 weeks and he was stillborn. So, the only place his name is displayed is on his gravestone.Sad
My youngest's name I have to admit I did carefully choose, a little girl this time, and her name means "father's happiness" which seemed apt after all we had previously gone through. So many little girls names derive from one particular one, which means "consecrated to God". I just felt that seeing that I had already given one of my babies "back" to God, my little girl needed her "own" name. Nothing religious at all, just how I felt.

Although, my eldest's middle name is after his Dad, and my daughter's middle name is the female version of the brother we lost as to have had mine would have been daft as it didn't go with the name we chose !

My name means "fit to be loved"...which is daft, because everyone is ! Smile

I have a Cameron James Alexander then surname, I promised he's not got a crooked nose and very few people know what it means. Unless they've considered calling their child it and looked it up Wink

I have a 14 year old Cameron James - nobody has ever mentioned the meaning and he loves his name.
He is very handsome and doesn't have a crooked nose :)

meanings such as crooked nose,blind or lame would not bother me if i really liked the name but to call a little girl a name meaning cow or any child a name meaning sadness or bitterness would i feel be very hard on any child. likewise i loved the name matilda until i realised she was the patron saint of disappointing children!

Ragz, so sorry for your loss. I can see why the meanings of your childrens' names are important.

the meaning of a name isn't necessarily important for me but if i knew a name meant something not very nice it would put me off as i would always think of it when i called my child that name. my cousin still kicks herself about not finding out the meaning of her son's name as it means dog. another friend has given her daughter a name that translates as pig.

Thank you. It's funny, they seem to become more important as they get older, I don't know why ?!

It's one of those things, maybe when baby arrives, you might look at him and think "he doesn't look like a Cameron"....

It can also put people off when they know someone with the same name - I don't know if our present PM puts you off ?!

MY DS is a Cameron and he doesn't really look like one. But we both loved the name and still delighted we chose it. So go for it. Noone has ever brought up the meaning.

My DS1 is a Cameron and the meaning issue has never come up. My own name means 'snare' (charming!!!) but it has never been an issue as its a classic biblical name. I think more of an issue is do you like the name and are their any prominent/historical people with the name that you have positive associations/vibes with. When we were looking for a name for DS we almost chose a similar scottish name but there was some one in the media with the same name who being a bit of a plonker at that put us right off.

My DS1 is a Cameron - he has a very sweet, non-crooked button nose. It's a lovely name, and really suits DS1 - am always really pleased to see it being used or contemplated!

I just was offering my little opinion, it's one of those things that some people do associate names with people, and I didn't want Claz1001 deciding she really loved the name and then thought "Oh no, how awful, never thought of him"....Claz1001's baby son and her family have to live with his name forever.

Just an example, how many people do you think have been considering Wayne for their baby, and after this weekends fish and chip papers have changed their minds ? Shock

Still undecided on name, but Cameron is very much on the shortlist.
