Erin- how popular and in what regions?

Due any day now and really like the name Erin, but was surprised to find that it is relatively popular (30th on 2008 statistics).

Was just wondering whether it's more/less popular in certain parts?

I guess what I'm also concerned to find out is it a new chavvy name or something that I'm unaware of!! (hmm)

I'm in Ireland and I don't know any, I am surprised it's #30 in the UK!

i think it's a second generation irish thing, found in London, liverpool and America. That'd be my stab in the dark.

Not keen on Enya or Aoibhinn. Although I'm from Irish family I'm not necessarily set on the Irish link, just like the name Erin and happens to be Irish really.

Not keen on the name Erin, I think it could be perceived as being that unmentionable C word in the UK. Any Irish name which is not totally authentic, eg shannon, which rose in popularity due to American influences is perceived to be the C word in the UK. I will be told I'm talking bollix in a moment no doubt, but it's just my observation. Caitlin might be another example. It is a proper name, but it was popular (in a mainstream way for young girls) in America before it became popular here.

Erin is nice - when i was a lot younger I wanted a daughter called Erin. I believe there was an Erin in The Waltons.

Surprised it is so prevalent, I don't know any young Erin's.

Agree with ValiumS here -- it's very much an Irish-American romantic/homesick invention.

I have an Erin and she is the only one we know. She is the only one at her (infant) school too. I am a bit surprised at that to be honest but it is quite nice too. We are located SE.

I'm in the south east and know about 3 young Erins.

I knew a bunch of them in the US.

I think it is reasonably popular with Irish, so I would say Catholic.

I have an Erin she's 4 - hadn't met any before she was born but now know of loads but with all different spellings............I still love the name but wish it wasn't so common

I love the name Erin! Would have been on my shortlist (which was actually a very long list!) if it hadn't been my cousin's name (she's 20).

i know 2 erin's both under 5 (NE region), think there may be 1 or 2 at DCs nursery too. So popular but not that popular.

I have an Erin May, and obviously thinks is a lovely name, only know 1 other and they will be in same year at school, we're manchester.

I know 2 18 year olds and one 14 year old in Cork. And a 10 year old in Belfast, where my dd1 was confused at meeting a child apparently called 'wee Urn'.

I know 3 Erins under 2 years old. Midlands. Lovely name though.
