Florence...Now I fear its going to become really popular...or depending on peoples political preferences, really disliked...

Hmmph I thought it was a great name.

Its so hard, all I have had to name before are dogs and cats, I can't ever imagine coming to a final decision.

My commiserations. Just be thankful they got in first! I would be gutted if my child's name was used by the Tory PM!

rachel234 · 02/09/2010 13:28

Good point, lowrib. At least your dd isn't born yet, so you can consider other options.

Raahh · 02/09/2010 14:00

It was on our list too- but to be honest, it was already very popular before the Camerons used it. I don't think they are setting a trend- merely following it. if you like it (I love it, was my gran's name), no reason you shouldn't still use it!

ValiumSingleton · 02/09/2010 14:36

Use Beatrice instead. It's in the same style and it's nicer.

sedgiebaby · 02/09/2010 15:01

Honestly don't give it a second thought, no idea what the Browns boys are called or the Camerons other kids, this wont matter in a short time. It is a popular name so I don't think it will be seen as owned by them in anyway.

CupcakesHay · 02/09/2010 15:03

Go with it anyhow - who cares! i agree with sedgiebaby - it's only really famous people who everyone remembers their kids names - and even then - only if they're odd names like Suri and Sparrow and Apple.

Florence is lovely. go with it.

getstuffed · 02/09/2010 15:04

bastards innit? if she shows up with my pram I'll cry, that's hormones for you. agree with sedgie, it'll get forgotten so use it.

greentriangle · 02/09/2010 15:10

I think one of Gordon Brown's boys is a very similar age to my DS. I have absolutely no idea what GB's DS is called and wouldn't mind if DS had the same name.

If you like the name, then use it.

The Camerons only "stole" it from you if they are your best friends and knew that you were going to use the name but decided to use it themselves!!!

looblee · 02/09/2010 16:02

Ha ha well no I can confirm the Camerons are not my best friends. I guess so i just hope it doesn't become REALLY popular now.

How about something similar then like Florentine or Florette?

looblee · 02/09/2010 17:10

Oh I like Florentine, thats a good one and will be added, thanks. its similar to another name that was lower down my list Clementine, but a lot of people don't like that not that, that bothers me.

Find the whole Florence debate amusing tbh.
DD's GM is Florence but always uses a pet name. Exp wanted DD to have Florence but I refused at the time as it was so outdated (DD is 23). We settled on her middle name for DD's middle name IYSWIM.
How times change Smile

Isn't Florette a brand of salad??

Personally I'm not keen on Florence. As a name it's fine, but I'm not keen on the derivatives. Don't like Florrie, and Flo sounds like something to do with tampons. Very annoying if it's the name you wanted though, I agree! (I'd have been GUTTED if they'd gone for Alice as that's my baby name!)

ValiumSingleton · 03/09/2010 08:46

Lurcherlover, Fleur is a tampon in Australia , so it's all just a bit too Biscuit what with Flo beiing a period. Floss is dental, of course. hmmm

Is flora considered a nn of Florence? It is by far the nicest imo.
