Am I going mad?

Somebody please talk some sense into me! I feel that I have chosen the wrong name for my ds who is now 15 months. It totally suits him but the reason I am now annoyed is that is seems like the most common name in the world. Everywhere I turn at home there is a child with the same name! Am I being totally silly? I cant get this out of my head. To add insult to injuy, my sister has just had a ds and has called him the name we were going to call our ds but then decided against but which afterwards I really regretted! I need someone to talk some sense into me. Ps it took us three weeks to name ds and my mum didnt want he name we chose because shes a teacher and had taught too many! This also bugs me! Even though she loves the name now because she associates it with her gorgeous grandson. Even as I write his I feel silly, Maybe I'll get over it will I! Has anyone else regretted their name choice because it was so common?

I don't think Connor is overly popular - I've never met one (to be fair, I did go to a girls only school), and I've only heard of two. One's a baby in Ireland and one is my great-grandpa, also Irish. I think it's a lovely name, and Connor James is great IMO.

Also, I think Evie (and Eve) is a simply beautiful name.

i know, through local school, of about 4 connors and about 3 evies. they are both nice names so people choosing them is no surprise - both lovely and strong sounding. i think the most important thing is to love the name and ignore everything / one else.
your son / daughter will be grateful for these names when they are grown up. far better than to give them something they will be embarrassed by.

I am a teacher and have not come across a conor yet . I would definately not class it as a popular name but that is just my opinion.

Awww...my godson is Connor-James and he is a cutie so obviously I think it is a great name choice. He is the only Connor at his 120 place day nursery. x

I don't know any Conors either.

I know millions of Thomases, Sams, Harrys and Olivers though.

I have a Connor but he's 13. When he was small it was a VERY popular name, but I only ever met 1 child with the spelling 'Conor'.

I only know of one Connor at my DC's school.

My son's name is much more popular than Connor. I didn't love his name when we chose it, but he has grown into his name and it suits him so well, I just love it now

I know of one conor, a friend of a friends son who is about 9, so not at all common/popular around here.

Hard to nickname though! I've been thinking about it and have given up! If you want a nickname, it'll have to come from somewhere other than his name I guess.

I've got three adult friends who are called nicknames which are to do with their appearance or character, which their mums gave to them when they were little. I'm afraid I can't post them here as they're so unusual it would completely out them / me.

Don't change his name, newmum! Conor is a nice name and not that common. I don't know any little Conors. I gave my son a top 20 name. I knew it was a top 20 name and Im kept it off the list til the last minute because it was a top 20 name. I know a couple of other wee boys with his name. That was inevitable. But if you really loved that name to begin with, it doesn't matter. The important thing is YOU liked the name.

At last count (2008) Connor with two 'n's was the 41st most popular boy's name and Conor with one 'n' was #199. Of course, it varies from place to place, but it's no Jack in the popularity stakes.

newmum, same situation here. We researched, made lists, etc. Came up with a great name which immediately afterward became the number one name in the US! I kid you not. I was completely gutted and still get rather annoyed about the whole thing. There was a variation that I would have been just as pleased with but dh didn't like it.

If it helps at all, the name really suits ds1 and even though it is now very popular I can't imagine him with any other name. And, as dh says, if it bothers him he can always go with his middle name.

My cousin's son is called Connor and he's about 10 I think. I think it was quite popular a few years ago, but there's enough of a gap in that popularity for it to be special for your DS. As you said yourself, he suits it, so don't change it!

FWIW I went to a very small junior school with 4 girls in my year. 3 of us had the same name, spelt 3 different ways (its not Elsa- I just like that name so put it as my MN nickname) it mattered not.
