My sister's struggling to think of a name for her daughter who's due in 2 weeks. Her name is Swahili in origin and she'd like something to go with that but pretty and meaningful too.
Any suggestions?

I was thinking about calling DD1 (born in Nairobi) Maisha (ma-ee-sha), it means life

I think very pretty

Also there are some pretty place names in Kenya that you could use - Tassia or Malindi for example

BuntyPenfold · 02/09/2010 12:02

Malindi is very pretty.
I think Nyota means 'star; it was in star trek.

Imani - means Grace. Lovely name.

Fredfred · 02/09/2010 12:08

Malika- can't remember the exact meaning though

YunoYurbubson · 02/09/2010 12:15

Doesn't Imani mean peace, not grace?

And I think Malaika means angel.

Could be wrong though.

What lovely names, I don't think I have ever heard any Swahili spoken. It must be a beautiful language.

It is gorgeous Bunty, go on holiday to Tanzania or coastal Kenya and you'll be swept away by the beautiful lilting tones... I can hear the waves and feel the sunshine just thinking about it!

I cant claim to be an expert on Swahili names, and am only going on what friends who had a DD called Imani a few years ago told me.

Saba. I think this is lovely. It means seven which may be an issue.

I like:
Aaliyah (Of the highest)
Amali (Activity; hope)
Amina (Truthful, trustworthy)
Amira (Princess)
Dalila (Gentleness, her soul is tender)
Eshe (Life)
Halisi (Truth)
Jamelia (Beautiful)
Lulu (Precious, pearl)
Malia (Queen)
Naima (Graceful)
Saida (Happy)
Zera (Blossoms, dawn)

It is a beautiful language with beautiful names
