I would love a beautiful name to suit our longed for baby girl, due in five weeks. List so far:

Rosie (I love this one although am concious its a nn but Rose is just too short to go with our surname)
Amber
Stella
Scarlett (DH not too keen)
Autumn Rose (MIL not keen!)
Elise
Elouise (will this just be shorterned to Louise?)
Analise
Maya/Mia
Chloe

Others I love but have been vetoed by DH:

Violet
Iona
Iris
Laila
Indira
Gabriella
Georgia

I have a boy with a v popular name so would like to have a name not toooooo popular this time round.

TIA.

Cecilia - saint of music.
It's been in my mind, although I don't know any recent babies called this!

PutTheKettleOn · 28/08/2010 17:42

Rosalind - shorten it to Rosie?
Eliza
Imogen

from your list i love Stella Smile

Ephiny · 28/08/2010 17:47

Rosemary?

I actually kind of love Autumn Rose, though can see why some might not be keen.

LilyBolero · 28/08/2010 17:49

I was going to suggest Rosalind or Rosamund as well.

Superness · 28/08/2010 18:46

I quite like Rosa-bell but of all the different variations of the name Rose I still come back to Rosie! Is it one to avoid do you think because it's a nn?

i think rosie is a very nice name, and consider it to be a proper name, not a nn. not to popular at the moment either, so would be an excellent choice

MollysChambers · 28/08/2010 23:44

Not keen on Rosie as "proper" name. Roslyn?
Amber - nice
Stella - nice
Scarlett (DH not too keen) - agree!
Autumn Rose (MIL not keen!) - agree!
Elise - Like
Elouise (will this just be shorterned to Louise?) - Also nice - Ellie as nn?
Analise - Yup
Maya/Mia - know quite a few - not so keen
Chloe - no

A1980 · 28/08/2010 23:55

I love Elise.

It reminds me of Fur Elise, one of my favourite piano pieces.

wisteria12 · 29/08/2010 01:02

Rosie - Rosalind, Rosamund, Rosabel are nicer.
Amber - OK but a bit 90s
Stella - Beer.
Scarlett - OK
Autumn Rose - Sounds like a pornstar to me.
Elise - OK, a tad chavvy.
Elouise - Spelt Eloise. I know one and no one shortens it.
Analise - Nice.
Maya/Mia - Nice.
Chloe - No. Dated as hell.

rowingboat · 29/08/2010 01:24

I used to know a girl called Rosalyn, but think Rosalind is nicer. Rosabel sounds quite made up to me, a bit fifi trixibel, pop star.

rowingboat · 29/08/2010 01:28

I found these Rose type names on 'think baby names' try the site, it's fab!

Rasia, Rasine, Rasja, Rasya, Rhoda, Rhodea, Rhodia, Rhody, Rosa, Rosaleen, Rosalia, Rosalie, Rosalin, Rosalina, Rosalind, Rosaline, Rosalinn, Rosalynn, Rosanie, Roselia, Roselina, Roseline, Rosella, Roselle, Rosena, Rosenah, Rosene, Rosetta, Rosette, Rosey, Rosheen, Rosie, Rosina, Rosine, Rosio, Rosita, Roslyn, Rosy, Roza, Rozalie, Rozaline, Rozalyne, Roze, Rozele, Rozella, Rozene, Rozina, Rozsa, Rozsi, Rozsika, Rozy, Ruza, Ruzena, Ruzenka, Ruzha, Ruzsa

Oh and Primrose

florencerose · 29/08/2010 01:41

there are loads of variations of Rosie as others have posted why not use one of those and let everyone know she will be a Rosie, although I gather if not popuar is important Rose is almost universal now (see David Cameron etc etc)
Scarlett/Autumn Rose are nice but a bit more 'funky' she is not your MIL daughter is all I will say to that.

The only thing I will say is to think carefully about not using your favourite name you can't assume you will have another girl

rowingboat · 29/08/2010 23:02

Wow Florencerose are you posting already, and only a few days old! I hope Mummy and Daddy don't catch you on their laptop! Grin

mathanxiety · 30/08/2010 00:30

Rosie -- reminds me of old fashioned wallpaper. Rosalie, Rosina, Roisin (Irish) and Zytka (Polish) are nicer imo
Amber -- I think of this as an airhead name
Stella -- Love
Scarlett (DH not too keen) -- I'm with your DH on this. I think of the Dublin expression 'I was scarlet', meaning extreme mortification, and The Scarlett Woman when I hear this name
Autumn Rose (MIL not keen) -- I agree with your MIL here
Elise -- Like, but it would become Ellie eventually
Eloise -- Wouldn't it be spelled Eloise, not Elouise? Always shortened to Ellie; there are thousands and thousands of Ellies, short for every name starting with EL.
Analise I would spell it Anneliese to avoid being called Analyse Love it
Maya/Mia -- Loads of Mayas and Mias
Chloe -- Was very, very popular but not so hot now.

A lot of your choices are very popular, or the potential nns are two-a-penny.

Of your list, I like Stella and Anneliese, and Elise, with the caveat that it will be shortened to the most popular name for girls on the planet.

rowingboat · 30/08/2010 11:32

I have now looked at the list a few times and I am coming around to Autumn Rose. There aren't many Autumns around and it is pretty memorable.
I think that's my current favourite now.
So what do you think about the names so far?

Superness · 30/08/2010 13:44

Chloe, Amber, Scarlett and Maya/Mia are now off the list! Stella, Autumn Rose, Elise, Eloise (corrected sp!) and Analise remain as does Rosie! I keep looking at the list of variations of Rose and running past DH as I quite like Rosella/Roselle too but he is not keen. In the end I will have to make a decision! Thanks for all your help. Very happy for more of your input though :)

morganlebuffay · 30/08/2010 21:46

....Sorry to lower the tone, but is it just me who sees a rather unwelcome word jumping out from "Analise"? Namely, the first four letters? Imagine being a teenage girl with that in your name.. because there will always be some little oik who picks up on it and won't let anyone forget about it! Even besides that, I think it looks prettier as Annalise, Annelise or Anneliese (the original spelling in German).

Stella, Elise and Eloise are gorgeous (though I wouldn't choose Eloise if you don't like Ellie).

mybootsaremuddy · 30/08/2010 22:05

I like Analise but prefer the Annalise or Annelise spelling.
Rosie is lovely, I know one thats short for Rosanna which i think is pretty.

Superness · 31/08/2010 11:56

Good point re my sp of Analise...would spell it as Annalise, Annelise or Anneliese! List now narrowed to Autumn, Stella, Elise or Rosie (or variation thereof!. Thanks all.

minipie · 31/08/2010 12:06

Autumn - pretty, but very "hippyish"

Stella - I love this name. Sadly DH says it just reminds him (and all other men) of beer

Elise - Love this name. Definitely my favourite from your list (including your long list).

Rosie - Pretty but very cutesy, so I would suggest Rose or Rosalind/Rosamund/Rosemary for the birth cert and then use Rosie in RL.
