We have this on our shortlist, but I keep discounting it due to the meaning (lame/disabled) do you think this matters.?

Then I come back to it as has an elegant 'sound' and we like Claudie as a nn and suits our requirement of a name which works in both French and English (bi-lingual family)its nice in my view for a little girl and a grown up...

Please advise on your thoughts?

Also feel free to tell me to do some work or I will never get to go on materntiy leave (I'm 37+3 and trying to handover my dept responsibilities and clear my desk but keep getting distracted!)

Claudia is a lovely name, but the meaning would put me off, to be honest. Shame as it sounds nice otherwise.

Personally I think meanings are really important - IMO it should be something uplifting/for child to aspire to etc. Although I do confess to being less strict if it is a name that has been in our family for generations.

I thought meanings were really important when I was pregnant and studying the name book. We chose a name, ds was born, he turned one today and I honestly couldn't tell you what his name means now. Far more important that you like the sound of it when you are speaking to her imo. Plus I think Claudia is a lovely name - go for it.

Well Andrew/Andrea means "manly" it's only baby-name-freaks (like me) who'll think about the meaning. It's a lovely name.

Claudia is lovely, and the meaning doesn't put me off.

My name means 'devoted to God'. I am not. Grin

It's a beautiful name, I have a very good friend called Claudia and think nothing of the meaning (have to say I didn't even know it) - If you are likely to look at her and think "lame/disabled" every time you say her name, then don't use it. If you're going to look at her gorgeous little face (presuming a bit, but sure it'll be true) and think "that's my gorgeous little Claudia/Claudie" then go for it.

I might nick it off you if the wriggling monkey inside me turns out to be a girl :o

I didn't know the name meant that. Wasn't it originally a roman family name of nobles?

a patrician family by the name of claudius and hence claudia as a female spin off?

Bumperlicious · 28/08/2010 10:31

I wouldn't consider name meanings at all, much prefer to consider how a name sounds. I didn't even know the meaning of Claudia and now it do it doesn't stop me wanting it on my list (sadly DH has vetoed it).

I can't remember anyone commenting on the meaning of my name, which incidentally is 'pure' Grin
