YOur colleague is being silly. If somebody else called their baby Florence now (as many will anyway as it's quite a popular name), you wouldn't think they were doing so out of slavish love for David Cameron, would you? Nobody will care what his daughter is called, it will be tomorrow's fish and chip paper, but your daughter's name will last her her whole life. If you love Florence then use it, otherwise you'll kick yourself!

Love Hattie but not sure about Harriet.

Have never heard of Zinnia, how do you pronounce it?

This happened with Leo when Tony and Cherie Blair had their son. It did see a surge in popularity but I wouldn't let that bother me. I agree with Morgan - if you love it use it.

sedgiebaby · 25/08/2010 21:23

No I disagree its not an unusual name, I couldn't even remember the blairs baby's name until I read the post above. If you like it go for it.

PaulineCampbellJones · 25/08/2010 21:25

I am sure half the population won't know/remember/care about the Cameron's baby name is a few weeks time. If you love it then use it.

Before this week did you know what their other kids (apart from Ivan) were called. I didn't and I bet most people didn't. I would say in a few weeks/months most people will have forgotten this ones name.

Now if you called your baby Endellion your collegue may have a point!

SirBoobAlot · 25/08/2010 22:34

When are you due? If its in the next few weeks I'd be prepared for a few initial of "Oh, that's the same as the Cameron's!". But no one will remember in X number of weeks. If you like it, use it.

Just don't use Rose as a middle name Wink

SE13Mummy · 25/08/2010 23:40

No, if you call your baby Florence people will assume it's because you like the name.

It would be a bit odd to change your surname by deed poll to Cameron and to then name your baby Florence Rose Endellion.

I have a Harriet who is known as Hattie - both are great names (and less popular than Florence in our bit of SE London).

skidoodly · 25/08/2010 23:42

Florence Cameron is going to date that name to 2010.

It's a great name, but there's no way I'd use it now.

People will not forget her name anymore than they've forgotten Leo Blair's.

Being a child born to a serving Prime Minister is a big deal.

Silvj · 25/08/2010 23:47

Tell folk to mind their own beeswax. If you love Florence then use it.

CupcakesHay · 26/08/2010 08:29

Load of rubbish - if you had Florence picked out and liked it, then stick with it!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 26/08/2010 08:41

If you like it, use it! I called my son Cameron and got a few wags saying "did you name him after the PM?". Er no. Hmm However, I am looking forward to decorating his bedroom with newspaper clippings which read "Cameron destroys Scotland", "Cameron responsible for the poor eating from the gutter" and "Cameron woos America". Wink

diddl · 26/08/2010 08:48

I like Hebe.
Also, Harriet, Cecily & Miranda.

I think some might think that you were copying the Cams-unless you had previously mentioned liking the name.

TrillianAstra · 26/08/2010 08:55

He's the Prime Minister, not the heir to the throne. By the time your daughter is old enough to write her own name no-one will be interested in Florrie Cameron.

'Date her name to 2010'? Well, no more than being 4 in 2014 or 20 in 2030 will date her to 2010.

Hulababy · 26/08/2010 08:56

I don't think people will assume you have copied TBH. It is one of the fastest growing names in the girl's name popularity charts for 2010. There are lots of baby Florence right now.

Florence Cameron is going to date that name to 2010.

Not sure I understand. Florence is one of the names of the year as it is. I don't think the PM using the name is going to be a big issue.

I am named Claire. Ws number 2 name year after I was born. And yes I knew loads of Claires over the years, around my age. But I can honestly say that having a name "of the time" has be of absolutely no worry, concern or hassle ni the slightest.

Threelittleducks · 26/08/2010 09:03

I would think of the beautiful Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine LONG before I realised that it is the name of the Cam baby.

Florence is a gorgeous name :)

And, in a few years, is anyone going to care?

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 09:47

Mm yes I think of Florence and the Machine much more readily than the Cameron baby when I hear the name Florence. One is a living breathing all-singing all-dancing flame-haired woman, the other is a tiny, presumably quite non-descript babe in arms, just like the thousands of other baby Florences in the country born to our friends, aquaintances and family. Yeah Florence will date to this period, but I think Flo Cam is a symptom (as it were) not the cause. I really don't think of the Blairs when I hear Leo... though Leo(nardo) di Caprio was popular at that time iirc...

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 09:49

(er not that baby Cam is not living & breathing Blush , was just speaking figuratively)

BuntyPenfold · 26/08/2010 10:15

Go for Florence if you want to - my Great Aunt Florence was always called Flossie not Florrie.
It is a popular name anyway. Calling your baby Endellion - well, that might be a bit suspect.

bytheMoonlight · 26/08/2010 10:30

I really do love Florence with nn Floss/Flossie.

But everyone I have told irl, and I mean everyone has pulled a Hmm face, now with the added connection to the Camerons I was about to give up with it.

Do you think my daughter will hate me if she goes through life being known as Floss?
