Gil is fine though.

I like Gilbert, actually, mostly because of Gil Grissom. I really like Ernest as a full name but I hate Ernie. It's horrid, and inevitable. So for that reason, I'd go for Gilbert because I prefer the NN Gil.

Prefer Gilbert of the two.

SlowlyLosingItQuicker · 17/08/2010 18:44

My Grandad was Ernest William or Ernie. Nothing wrong with the name I don't get the rudeness towards other peoples chosen names. Honestly they're not going to be your childs name. Give your opinion but do it in a polite manner.

LetThereBeRock · 17/08/2010 18:51

They're both terrible.

mathanxiety · 17/08/2010 23:27

Grover.

cat64, people aren't just giving their opinion, lots are asking if I'm joking because of some old Sesame street characters, as you can get Bert and Ernie from my names Hmm

I said we'd use Gil nickname, so it would be Gil or Ernie, but that's been ignored by some. It's not like they're going to be used for twin boys!

Thanks for the comments so far, the good and bad. Any more?

BelligerentGhoul · 18/08/2010 11:41

I like Ernest because of Oscar Wilde but Ernie and Bert are both v bad as nns.

Gilbert is, imvho, awful.

WitchyWooWoo · 18/08/2010 12:33

earnest. importance of being earnest is one of my favourite plays so im biased

Tillyscoutsmum · 18/08/2010 12:35

I love Gilbert (DS was very nearly a Gil). Not so keen on Ernest though

Thissideofchannel · 18/08/2010 12:40

I don't mind either but prefer Ernest. Both are certainly more interesting than Jack or Alfie or whatever else is in the top 10 these days. Am also surprised at some people's rude comments.

SpanishLady · 18/08/2010 13:26

Gilbert - as could be Gil or Bertie - reminds me of lovely Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables.....sigh
