Hi ladies

If you could have a look at the names we're considering and let me know what you think...

Boy
Patrick (my current favourite)
Hamish
Archibald (Archie for short)

Girl
Ailsa (loving this at the moment)
Grace
Nancy

Any other suggestions gratefully received. I'd love to hear some unusual Irish names. I would consider Cillian for a boy maybe, although I know two people who've used this recently. It would be nice to have some more Irish names on the list (I'm Irish, hubby Scottish)

TIA

BG x

Patrick - love this one. A very distinguished under used classic name.
Hamish - I do like it. I like other Scottish names more. I love Donald, Fergus, Gregor and Bruce.
Archibald - Archie is cute but I think some consider it too popularised now, I prefer Richard with Richie for short. I think Richie is just as cute as Archie.

Girl
Ailsa - not too keen sorry.
Grace - like it but so popular. Gracie is lovely though.
Nancy - lovely, I like it. It's cute but strong.

What about Dulcie in the same style as Nancy? or Joy in the same style as Joy. Ailsa looks like it's an Irish name spelt wrong. I do like Elsa though. That's beautiful. I also like Greta and Anya which although not in anyway Scottish or Irish have a strongly northern european feel.

I'm Irish and my children were nearly Clodagh Maeve and Diarmuid Patrick. At least if I'd gone down the route of using Irish names, those are the ones I would have chosen. Diarmuid is lush imo. And there are hardly any for some reason.

ValiumSingleton · 04/08/2010 18:20

Joy in the same style as Grace I mean obviously

bobbygeorge · 04/08/2010 18:43

Thanks Vallium! I love Joy and had actually thought about using it as a possible second name. Interesting that you mentioned Gregor - DH loves it, but it makes me think of Greg the baker's (silly!) It's a good name.

Oh I love these names! There's definitely a Scottish feel to them.

If you forced me to choose I think I'd pick Patrick and Ailsa.

Imarriedafrog loving the nickname Patch.

LynetteScavo · 04/08/2010 19:36

Hamish I love!

cyteen · 04/08/2010 19:38

I like Patrick but hate Pat enough to put me off ever using it.

Hamish is okay, Archibald just makes me think of John Cleese in barrister's costume.

Love Ailsa (I know a fabulous Ailsa), Nancy and Grace are okay but a bit blah IMO.

Oldjolyon · 04/08/2010 20:19

Patrick (my current favourite) Don't mind Patrick, but not sure of the nicknames - Pat, Paddy and so on...

Hamish - Sorry, but I know too many dogs called Hamish. Its a bit of a dog's name to me.
Archibald (Archie for short). Like Archie.

Ailsa (loving this at the moment). Really not keen on this one I'm afraid. Not a pretty name.
Grace - Love. It was popular a few years ago, but I've not come across any newborn Graces for a little while, so may be less trendy now? Its my favourite from your list.
Nancy - Nice.

Good luck

juanitad · 04/08/2010 20:25

I have a Patrick, so am obviously biased! It has always always always been my favourite boys name! So far I haven't come across another one, so it's not very common, but at the same time people don't look at you pityingly when you tell them the name, everyone has heard of it after all!

Kathleen123 · 05/08/2010 10:41

I like Patrick and Nancy.

Kathleen123 · 05/08/2010 10:43

P.S. DH suggested Hamish, I vetoed it. I think names like Callum and Ian, a Scottish connection is irrelevant, as so well used, but Hamish is toooo Scottish, for a welsh/english couple.

DH is welsh but seems to like all the Scottish and Irish names.....

Ineedsomesleep · 05/08/2010 10:45

Like Patrick but prefer Hamish. Archibald/Archie is too popular for my taste.

Love Grace and Nancy. Know a lot of Grace's though. Not keen on Ailsa.

theagedparent · 05/08/2010 10:47

Hamish and Nancy

Colliecross · 05/08/2010 11:07

Patrick and Nancy - can see them now.

Doozie · 05/08/2010 12:17

Love the boys names, Patrick is my favourite too.

Sorry, don't like any of the girls names. How about Cecilia?

bobbygeorge · 05/08/2010 13:25

Thanks everyone! It's interesting to hear what you all think.

I still love Patrick and I'm not so in love with Archie anymore - it's probably a bit too popular and I think I heard recently that it's what Danielle Lloyd called her LO, which puts me off a bit.

I still love Ailsa - not sure why, but it just keeps screaming out at me. Nancy is great too though and has a history in our family, so it's a toss up between the two at the mo. I will probably use Grace or Joy as a middle name.

I have a really strong feeling that we're having a little boy though!

I like Ailsa. I knew one at school 40 years ago and have never met another.
