Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca"

Has anyone ever wondered what the name of Max de Winter's 2nd wife was? In the book "Rebecca" the ghost of the evil 1st, dead wife looms over the 2nd wife. The 2nd wife's name is never given. At one point the husband says - "what a beautiful and unusual name", 2nd wife says "my father gave it to me, he was an artist".

I think it was Lalage (Lal-ah-gay). Any thoughts? Perhaps Imogen?

Given the date it was written, probably Sharon?

LJS666 · 30/07/2010 23:59

Tsk - Sharon!?

Please, it was Amanda.

Just kidding, I think it was Lalage, Hermione or Imogen.

Something slightly nuts but beautiful.

No major characters in any of her books ever has children. Did she just inhabit a world of infertile people, because there wasn't much in the way of birth control back in her day.
