DH and I have slightly differing opinions on this one so would be interested to see what other people think!

Thanks

Lovely name. I was just pondering it the other day. Really very pretty.

tattycoram · 29/07/2010 12:55

I've always loved it.

Doozie · 29/07/2010 12:56

The Algerian nursery assistant at DC's nursery has this name. She's lovely. I think it is a popular name in Brazil as well. I can see an Ipanema beauty with this name.

BoojaB · 29/07/2010 12:57

I'm not keen as it sounds like a skin condition! Sorry!

sonniebonnie · 29/07/2010 13:26

Very pretty!

Fimbo · 29/07/2010 13:31

It's the name of a female wrestler - Sweet Soraya.

FAMILY CONFIDENTIAL: WRESTLING MUM
Library Synopsis

Documentary looking at the life of Julia, landlady of The Wrestler's Arm pub on the outskirts of Norwich and mother of six who is also a female wrestler under the name of Sweet Soraya. The programme follows her as she prepares for the British ladies title.

LimaCharlie · 29/07/2010 13:34

I thought it was pretty til I read Fimbos post

piprabbit · 29/07/2010 13:34

As in Sorayasis (Psoriasis)?
At least you won't need to wonder about nicknames at school.

chocolatejunkie · 29/07/2010 13:40

LOL! Would DD ever forgive me if she found out she was named after a wrestler?! Thanks for all the quick responses.

DH and I both love it but while he's keen to go for it I'm worried that it's a bit too way out for us (we have a very dull surname). Also, a couple of people have made similar comments to Doozie - it's very 'foreign' sounding. Does that matter do you think?

Also for me, it's got a nice literary connection (there's a Soraya in my fave book The Kite Runner) and there was a Queen Soraya in Afghanistan who fought for women's rights. Love the idea of naming DD after a strong woman.

zenoushka · 29/07/2010 14:18

I like the name, I had a friend called Soraya at school and she was the most lovely person ever!

shumway · 29/07/2010 14:22

It's my middle name. Named after Princess Soraya of Iran.

Colliecross · 29/07/2010 14:27

can't bear it, sorry - sounds like sore

shumway · 29/07/2010 14:34

Thanks!

LetThereBeRock · 29/07/2010 14:40

I love it.

I have fond memories of a lovely Iranian woman called Soraya that I used to know,so it has very positive associations for me.

kayah · 29/07/2010 14:47

Colliecross · 29/07/2010 14:51

sorry shumway

Threelittleducks · 29/07/2010 14:55

Like milk. Soya milk.
Or my toddler saying sorry.

slim22 · 29/07/2010 15:11

absolutely gorgeous!
Primarily refers to a constellation of stars.
I imagine a very soulful strong sensuous woman.
I know many sorayas. young and old, all very quietly resilient, beautiful, strong willed women.

LaundryLyne · 29/07/2010 15:57

Not keen, sorry.

Firawla · 29/07/2010 16:07

mathanxiety · 29/07/2010 16:50

I love it. I knew one in school (long ago) and she was really nice. Very exotic for Ireland in the 70s -- her parents were Iranian.

GormlessHeart · 29/07/2010 17:44

REally like this, it's on my list- nice meanings/namesakes too...
