Just wondering really...is it too common, and does it sound chavvy? I'm not very fond of the shortening to Nathan.

I think it'd be shortened to Nat, mostly. I like it, don't think it's chavvy at all. No idea how common (as in popular) it is, but I don't know a single Nathaniel.

Excellent name, I only know of one (teenager) - shortens to Nat which I like (Nate also good shortening). Not too overused, but a classic name.

Actually, I do know two small Nathans (as well as adult ones) - had never thought that they might be Nathaniel shortened. I'd always considered Nathan a separate name in its own right.

emmyloo2 · 28/07/2010 09:29

I actually like it but love it more when shortened to Nate. I love Nate as a nickname. I think Nathan is a separate name.

pagwatch · 28/07/2010 09:29

I really like it. I too think Nathan is just Nathan. A Nathaniel would be Nat I should think - which is cool too.
Love it

SqueezyB · 28/07/2010 09:30

love love love it - my top boys name, DD2 would have been Nathaniel James if born with a willy

I like the NN Nate personally.

LaundryLyne · 28/07/2010 09:50

I like it

5DollarShake · 28/07/2010 09:53

Nathan is nothing to do with Nathaniel.

I really like Nathaniel - shortened to Nate (not Nat). It was on my list for a second boy, but DH didn't like it, unfortunately.

Colliecross · 28/07/2010 10:13

I don't think it is chavvy tho don't like it a lot. (sorry)

MathsMadMummy · 28/07/2010 10:16

we nearly used it but we would've spelled it nethaniel/nethanael just to be weird/different. I know a nathan so to me, nathaniel looks like nathan with a bit tacked on the end IYSWIM?

I think we would've had the middle name rhys as it goes quite nicely IMO

Kathleen123 · 28/07/2010 10:22

Love Nathaniel. Like it shortened to Nat.

gormlessdinner · 28/07/2010 10:25

Love it. All the best babies are called Nathaniel

notagrannyyet · 28/07/2010 10:27

I prefer the name Nathan, but Nathaniel is still a lovely name. As a nn I would prefer Nat or Nath, to Nate. But having 5 sons I am well aware that you have no real control over the nn they have as they grow up.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/07/2010 06:05

Gorgeous, and def yes to Nate as a shortening!

diddl · 29/07/2010 09:01

Love it!

zozzle · 29/07/2010 09:49

Its my brothers name - but spelt Nathanael. We call him Nat.

He is now in his 30s but growing up my parents called him Natty. He now calls himself Nathan as he says people struggle to spell his full name.

Lovely name. Def not chavvy!!! A great strong biblical name!

Chynah · 29/07/2010 11:26

My son is Nathaniel (nn Nate) - love it!

thecoffeelady · 29/07/2010 12:24

love it love it love it!
it was our choice first time round but we had a DD so it is back on the list for #2 due in a week!

We would shorten it to Nate as a NN, after Nate in Six Feet Under. I know a few Nathans but for an inexplicable I reason prefer Nathaniel.

Yellowflowers · 29/07/2010 12:38

Really like it but dh doesn't
