Is it Thalia like failure?
Or is it Thalia stressing the ending like Josiah?
Or what?

The Josiah ending.

I have a niece named Thalia.

Eglu · 27/07/2010 11:24

I would say Talleea, so yes like Josiah.

summery · 27/07/2010 11:26

Ta-lee-a

jeee · 27/07/2010 11:32

In the Antonia Forest books it was definitely as in 'failure' - but she was always known as Tim

toodles · 27/07/2010 11:33

I disagree with the pronunciations above. The 'Thal' part is prounced like the start of thalamus and the 'ia' is pronounced like 'iah' as in Josiah with the accent on the first a.

Esmee · 27/07/2010 11:36

I've only known it to be pronounced TAH-lee-a.

Colliecross · 27/07/2010 11:40

Yes jee and I have wondered ever since how to pronounce it as Lawrie thought it was Failure.
Some people say T and some TH then, and ee-yah or eye-ah.
It looks very pretty written down.

To me, Josiah is pronounced Jos-eye-ah.

Are people therefore pronouncing Thalia - Tahl-eye-ah?

I would pronounce it TAH-lee-ah

PaintingTheFence · 27/07/2010 12:23

I thought it was TAL-ya, short for Na-TAL-ya

Kathleen123 · 27/07/2010 14:09

No, its Tar-lee-a.

I think its pretty.

Kathleen123 · 27/07/2010 14:11

I've met a little girl called Talia, if that saves any confusion on the pronunciation.

PaintingTheFence · 27/07/2010 14:11

Is this a regional thing? Like bath with a short a or a long a? Any northerners pronounce it as Tar-lia?

iloveasylumseekers · 27/07/2010 14:18

The one I know is half Colombian and pronounces it TAHL-yah

LJS666 · 27/07/2010 15:15

I thought it was like "Taylor"?

Bacofoil · 27/07/2010 15:23

I have known a Talia and a Thalia. Both pronounced it Tar-lee-a.

proudfoot · 30/07/2010 21:47

Tah-lee-a

rachxx · 30/07/2010 22:12

On the pronounciation website the man says tay-lee-a

LexieKJ · 30/07/2010 22:13

I've known two children with this name and both have pronounced it Tar-lee-er.

kiwidreamer · 31/07/2010 00:28

vote for Tar-lee-a from me too

NickOfTime · 31/07/2010 00:32

has someone been reading percy jackson?
my kids are obsessed and we have recently had the 'how do you pronounce thalia' discussion...
haven't met a real one though, so can't help, but i read 'tar-lee-a' like natalya. could be wrong!

TheNextMrsDepp · 31/07/2010 00:36

I have only known it pronounced TAR-lee-ah.

seeker · 31/07/2010 00:53

It's a Greek word and it is Thalia - to rhyme with failure. Honestly - no question. That's just how it is.

And a very nice name too,

NickOfTime · 31/07/2010 02:55

fab! someone who knows - and that makes sense with the percy jackson stuff too. i will inform my children and resume my 'font of all knowledge' status.

seeker · 31/07/2010 09:58

I think she was the Muse of Comedy - bu don't quote me on that one, it's a long time since I failed 1st year Greek at University!
