I am expecting my second child towards the end of August and although we have sorted out a list of names, I am still feeling a little confused!!! We have a three year old son already called Ben and have been told that we are expecting a baby girl this time. I was just wondering if you could give me some constructive feedback to these girls names. Both me and my husband really like some of the more old fashioned names and have listed them in order of our favourites so far. Our favourite being Esther Isabella or Esther Rose followed by:

Daisy Isabella
Beatrix/Beatrice Rose
Scarlett Mary
Esme Grace
Sophia Rose

What do you think? Is Esther too old fashioned?

I really like the idea of these two names because they are an alternative to Isabella and not too popular.

The only thing is, I am not a big fan of the nn Izzy. If I was to use Isabella, I would probably use Bella as a nn. What other nn could you have for these two names besides Izzy?

It us such a beautiful name mousemummy. Im still not sure if ours will be Esther Rose or Esther Isabel/la yet. We are going to make a decision on the day. I definately think that Esther will be the winning name though!

Oh forgot to ask Mousemummy. Do you ever shorten her name to anything, or keep it as Esther?

She is always Esther to us. Everyone comments on how lovely her name is, a 'proper' name without being very popular at all - either of your choices are lovely and you're probably right to just wait and see, we did with all of them - best of luck with it all!!!!

Thanks Mousesmummy

Lovely choices!

But i'm surprised you picked up on the 'Rose' and Vines connection as being too 'garden like' when you have Daisy on your list? Surely Daisy Vines as her given name is a def no-no?

Anyway as i said the rest are all lovely and good luck with your baby girl!

I know what you mean. Daisy is my husbands choice and I thought it was too 'garden like' but he said it was quirky!!! I do like the name though, so kept it on the list but I know what you mean about Daisy and Vines going together. Rose would not be as much of a concern beacause of it being a middle name but still keeps playing on my mind a little.

Im glad you like the other choices though.

Esther Rosalind?
Esther Rosemary?
Esther Sophia?
I love Beatrice Rose too.

Daisy is a little girl name, imo, not a name for a woman once she hits 30, 40, etc., and also very much 'now'. I prefer Margarita or Marguerite.

Roz14 · 31/07/2010 10:21

Thanks mathanxiety. We have considered Esther Sophia but not Esther Rosalind or Rosemary, which are both lovely. Rosemary would be a lovely alternative to just Rose because of the link to my grandmother's middle name Mary. I will run it past my husband. Thanks for the suggestions.
