Prounounced Lotta. Tis german & I really love it but DH not sure. If spelt properly- Lotte, he thinks she will get called Lottie (which I don't mind but prefer Lotte).

Lotte is pronounced Lott-e and NOT Lotta or Lottie.

The -e is hard to explain in English but it is the same -e that is in words like Tasse, Kanne, Motte in German. It is a 'eh' sound like the beginning of energy/enemy.

Hope this helps. I like Lotte very much but would possibly use Lotta or Lottie in English speaking countries because people will struggle with Lotte.

annasophia · 16/07/2010 11:27

Should have added that I'm German .

Hedwig3 · 16/07/2010 11:30

GORGEOUS

I have taught a Lotte and there were no pronunciation problems.

Really lovely name, and the Charlie & Lola thing is cute if you know the reference, but most people won't.

CharlieBoo · 16/07/2010 13:40

Its really lovely, I also wouldn't have known how to pronounce but really like it.

MaryMungo · 16/07/2010 13:48

Like it. "Lotta" would have been my first pronunciative guess.

Pasiphae · 16/07/2010 13:53

I love it. I would said Lott-eh.

Colliecross · 16/07/2010 15:52

Lovely name.

valiumSingleton · 16/07/2010 16:07

I like it. My first reaction was that I prefer Lottie, but in the length of time it's taken me to read this thread, it's grown on me.

I agree with the Lotte spelling. If people get it wrong they are wrong, but Lotte is right. Feel this way about Niamh too.

Hedwig3 · 16/07/2010 18:06

The Lotte I know has a Belgian father and he pronounces it with a very gentle 'a' at the end, almost an 'e' and almost not there if that makes sense.

That actually makes it sound even more lovely!

tyler80 · 16/07/2010 18:12

I love the name, other half is Danish and it's fairly common over there. Unfortunately taken by one of the family already so no use for me

They spell it Lotte also, pronounced as annasophia describes. In Danish the second half of Charlotte is pronounced the same way (which is where i guess it originates from), very different to the English pronunciation.

Trying to rack my brains for an English word with an ending that sounds similar to the e but can't think of any right now

ViveLaFrak · 17/07/2010 15:42

There isn't one, but there isn't a correct isolated english pronunciation if the 'a's at the adidas either! It's one of those things that's difficult to explain because it's subtly different to be completely authentic, but that the end if the day it's not massively important as pronunciations vary from country to country anyway.

Either way Lotte (I would describe it as emphasing the second t slightly?) has a pronunciation which is manageable in English and is a lovely name so you should go for it

zenoushka · 17/07/2010 15:54

I really like Lotte - go for it!

CapitalText · 17/07/2010 16:10

Sorry, I don't like it.

mathanxiety · 17/07/2010 16:20

Lovely name.

Hollylee · 01/01/2016 09:17

Hi! I'm interested to know if you called your daughter Lotte? I am having such difficulty as my 7 month old is called Lotte and all I can hear is loddie when people say it fast! It's really bothering me and even considering changing her name. Has anybody else found this?

HanSolo · 01/01/2016 09:24

Holly- you might want to pm the OP. They may well not see this otherwise. (If they're still here).
Lotte is (still) a lovely name.
Congratulations on your DD, keep persevering, people get it eventually.

Bright32 · 03/01/2016 05:29

Thank you for your reply! I will try that

3luckystars · 03/01/2016 06:01

I would pronounce it LOT, that's what I read when I saw the thread. I have never seen it before but thought it was a boys name actually.

Lotta sounds lovely alright. Best of luck with the baby, it's a great name.

MrsCaecilius · 04/01/2016 14:29

I have a Swedish friend called Lotta and always though it was a pretty name.

RiverTam · 04/01/2016 14:47

Lovely name. I would pronounce it Lott-uh, something like that.
