yy, rustic and homely rather than posh.

Shirleygoodness · 15/07/2010 17:51

I've got one. We're not posh and have a plain/funny surname. Can't see what the problem is with the margarine having the same name, it's not like it's a porn mag or anything. Florrie is close to the pronunciation of the Gaelic for it which I think is Flodidh.

We call ours FloJo, Flossie Bossie, and Flo ra the Explorer.

Oh, have just noticed you've gone off it for the spread connotations (wtf?)...

waitingforbedtime · 15/07/2010 17:59

Thanks, will look up gaelic version

Flòraidh

Shirleygoodness · 15/07/2010 19:17

Of course, knew it didn't look right. But the pronunciation is about Flothhy, at least the way my Dad says it is!

My other favourite Gaelic names are Oighrig (Effie), Ronaig (sp? - Rachel) and Mar saili (I have one of these - Marjorie).

Beautiful name - we're having a boy but before we found out it was a fave

EmmaRoyd · 16/07/2010 18:56

It's a lovely name but it is spoilt by the margarine connotations. I went to school with a Flora and she endured the same 'spreads easily' taunts on a daily basis.

MummyLovesSadie · 16/07/2010 22:40

I agree with Belgianbun, I just can't understand why people would have a nn when it's as long as the real name! Unless like Shirleygoodness's dd's names & it's more of a funny pet-name that you'd use within the family.

How about Florentine with a nn of Flossie??

zenoushka · 17/07/2010 12:09

Despite the margarine connotations I think it's a pretty name.

Pingpong · 17/07/2010 12:15

I like Flora

CakeandRoses · 18/07/2010 22:33

I like it.
