Coeliac and headaches

My 12yo son was diagnosed as coeliac a few years ago, when he was 8. He was a silent coeliac, and we only discovered his diagnosis after my daughter was diagnosed; unlike her brother, she had every. Single. Symptom. Headache, body aches, bad stomach, tiny stature, constantly ill.

Hes started getting headaches / stress headaches, which are definitely worse when he’s been glutened or when he has a bug; usually forehead pain. He can also have brain fog following gluten exposure.

Does anyone else, especially kids, with coeliac suffer with headaches / migraines? The paediatrician said that a GF lifestyle will stop all symptoms, but this doesn’t take into account symptoms caused by a stomach bug, for instance, that seems to knock him more than your average 12yo.

He shouldn’t be ‘glutened’ though. If he is it will continue to cause the gut damage which affects recovery from things, especially as gut damage affects nutrient absorption, so he will be low, and it will take longer to recover from any viruses.

It can take several months for gut damage to heal. He needs to be really strict to be GF when eating.
