Coeliac diagnosis

Just wondered if anyone has been diagnosed recently and how long it took?

for reference I had bloods done on the 15th March, my Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies came back at 111 and my IgA level also came back positive in line with coeliac - the doctor has referred me to gastro so it’s a waiting game but finding my symptoms are increasing.

any insight would be great! X

My son was diagnosed a year ago. He was positive on bloods and we were not put forwarded for biopsy perhaps due to his age. We went GF immediately. Are toot waiting on endoscopy?

Em3009 · 20/04/2025 16:20

@mangomaggie yes I believe so - the doctor said about an endoscopy but the letter I got from the hospital said I may or not be offered one! Confused x

My heptologust has just suggested that I may be coeliac, so just waiting for bloods. I have an endoscopy next week but that is for something else. So watching with interest

Em3009 · 20/04/2025 16:46

@Youmeanyouvelostyourkey have you had a long wait for this endoscopy?

No , not in this case. It started off as non urgent but they saw a polyp they want to investigate so it got upgraded under the 2 week rule. Otherwise it would have been longer

@Youmeanyouvelostyourkey hope all goes well for you x

The gastro will probably ask for a second blood test from you and if it's really high then they may give you a clinical diagnosis without needing endoscopy (this is what happened with my son 7 months ago), but if your levels are low - but still positive - they'll require an endoscopy to take biopsies. Unfortunately you must continue to eat gluten until all your tests are complete or it will alter your results.

@Realisation14 thank you - did you have a long wait for the gastro appointment?

About 3 weeks but we're in Northern Ireland and it was paediatrics gastro so probably not a decent indicator of how long you may wait. If you receive a letter from the dept I'd ring the secretary there and ask what the general length of wait is and even let them know you'd be willing to go on a cancellation list if they have one.

Also waiting for endoscopy here. Borderline bloods though so I'll definitely need the scope. No idea on waiting times, just a considerable wait is what I was told. Probably 1 year +. I personally have been very unwell so had to go gluten free & will eat it again in the run up to the endoscopy. Just means I can't accept a cancellation

ExitPursuedByABare · 28/05/2025 13:24

If you are coeliac what’s the treatment?

Em3009 · 28/05/2025 13:40

@ExitPursuedByABare no gluten diet :)

Can I ask how long your blood tests took to come back? Nervously awaiting my sons results. Googling it says 1-2 weeks. Is that right? Xx

Em3009 · 11/06/2025 11:41

@Mummyspider27 my blood test was really quick - a couple of days but I’m still waiting to be seen by gastro, currently 11 weeks in! X

That's great op that you now know for certain and can start your healing GF journey! It's not easy and is slow but you'll get there.
