Hi, my DH has had a PA diagnosis for 20 years. Has been on various medication for the last 10 years. About to move on to the biologics injection phase of treatment as it has progressed in the last 12 months. Appointment with rheumatologist is later this month.

On Thursday he had back pain for the first time but seemed ok. Today the pain has progressed, he can’t bear his own weight and I have just carried/dragged him to our bedroom. He’s really struggling.

Until today it has usually been feet, ankles, knees and to a lesser extent elbows, wrists and fingers.

I suppose my question is what do we do now? The last time this happened was more than 14 years ago before he got a diagnosis. It’s been that long since I’ve had to physically move him anywhere as it’s been well-controlled.

14 years on this has come out of nowhere and he is now older and I am worried about causing more damage by hauling him about.

What should our next steps be? He can’t wait until his appointment, he’s in so much pain. Shall I take him to A and E tomorrow? I think he probably needs a Kenalog injection at the very least. It’s been so long since this kind of flare up I’ve forgotten what to do.

Does his rheumatologist have a nurse help line? Some do. Weekdays only though.
You could try 111 and see if you can get an OOH gp appointment.

I hope your husband is now getting treatment. There is a great support group on Facebook for this condition and they work with all the big PsA agencies like Brit-Pact and PAPAA. It is called Psoriatic Arthritis UK Group and has a cup of tea as the profile picture. Lots of great support, knowledge and resources in there x
