Autoimmune conditions and immune system in general

I recently posted in AIBU about the fact that every time I get a cold virus, I break out in hideous skin blisters and mouth ulcers. You can see my original thread here.

My GP has suggested that because I have an autoimmune condition (PBC with a possible crossover with autoimmune hepatitis) and because my immune system is therefore otherwise occupied, this is how it responds when under attack from a virus.

I was just wondering if anyone else has found this to be true? It makes me very nervous about the possibility of starting any course of treatment designed to suppress my immune system...

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with this, it sounds awful. To be honest I’ve not heard of it, but it sounds like you need a referral to a specialist to investigate further. I’d ask your GP for a referral (could even try seeing a different GP), or if you can try and get private health insurance and then use that. I couldn’t get the NHS to deal with my symptoms seriously, then I went via BUPA and got diagnosed with an autoimmune condition.
