Azathioprine and white cell count

I've been taking this medicine for a few years and have regular blood tests as is standard.

A test two weeks ago showed my white cell count was low. My consultant contacted me and said I should stop taking Azathioprine and re-test blood weekly until the level improves.

So far the white cell count hasn't gone up. Anyone have any experience of how long this might take please?

And could abruptly stopping Azathioprine put my autoimmune conditions into a flare up? (aaaaargh!)

I don't know anything about azathioprine but have similar problems on methotrexate - my normal WBC level is pretty low so it doesn't have to drop much before they tell me to withhold it. Usually bounces back within 4 weeks maximum, sometimes quite suddenly, so don't give up hope.
