Is anyone else watching the new Australian tv series on Netflix ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ - I’m only on episode 2 and so far it’s very good with lots of recognisable Australian actors; and a young lead actor who plays a wonderful character.

I’ve not yet read the book by Trent Dalton that the series is based on, but will. I’ve just started Trent Dalton’s book ‘All our shimmering skies” (and I’m enjoying it so far).

Read the book after you finish watching! I loved the stage play but DH hated it.

Wonderful! Watched it all in two days

I’m up to the bit where he’s broken into Boggo Rd Prison to see his mum.

Jocelyn Morehouse is the Director. She also directed The DressMaker with Kate Winslet, Judy Davis and Liam Hemsworth. I’ve seen that movie twice and will watch it again. Such a brilliant lot of characters. I’m a fan of Australian movies and tv series of this style. Cloud Street was a similar style: I appreciate how some Australian directors really know how to show our suburbs and countryside at their quirkiest best. Also love the grittier movies of Goldstone and tv series Mystery Rd. The Drover’s Wife is on Netflix too and it is very good.

Just finished watching this I loved it!

I’ve just started the last episode but I’ve had to stop for this afternoon as I’ve got things to do. But the episode title, and the appearance of the blue bird are concerning me. (Don’t tell me 🙂)

I just finished the last episode. Loved the whole series. I loved that this family triumphed. Now I need to read the book.

I read the book, well some of it. I found it so relentlessly sad and depressing that I couldn’t finish it. I’m going to watch the series though as I’ve seen the trailers and it looks good.

BrittleVeneers · 17/01/2024 08:10

@Ozgirl75 the series is sad at times but it’s not relentless. There are some very shocking moments, some sad gritty ones, as well as lovely, lovely moments.

I’m wondering what to watch next, suggestions from anyone would be welcome. TIA.

I'm just about to watch episode 4. It's not the sort of thing I usually watch (and I only started it to see Simon Baker!) but I'm really enjoying it.

BrittleVeneers · 19/01/2024 08:50

i read today that it’s quite the success for Netflix in many countries. Glad to read you are enjoying it @ElliesMum16 . The only problem I have after watching a good movie or tv series is finding one as equally as good to watch next.

Loved it, and it was a very true period piece as well I felt. Made me nostalgic.

MrsVeryTired · 07/02/2024 11:57

@BrittleVeneers have you seen Upright? Less crime but has a similar feel. On Sky. Its fab

HoppingPavlova · 08/02/2024 02:16

Yep, saw Upright ages ago. Was very good. Tim Minchin is great and the girl was very impressive also. I’m pretty sure I watched it on Foxtel, not sure whether it’s still there.

I loved the book but I'm finding the netflix series completely overdone, like a hypercolour, cartoon sort of version of Australia in the 80s.

Did you live in Australia in the 80’s outside of Sydney or Melbourne? I’ve think it’s pretty accurate of areas outside of these from my recollection.
