(I'm also a bit envious as I have never learned how to follow a crochet pattern, so although I can do the basic stitches, I have never actually been able to achieve anything beyond a square or a circle!)

Pippi following a pattern is extremely easy. Much easier to follow a crochet pattern than a knitting pattern. If you get a "learn to crochet" type of book it'll have really easy patterns in there for you to follow which will give you the basics to be able to do anything. Give it a go!
