Arrrrrgh! What am I doing wrong in my magic ring?!

I am trying to crochet a magic ring, but my ring is always at the end of my stitches, not either end of the row, so I can't pull it tight- what am I doing wrong?

I've only done a little basic crochet before, and I have checked out loads of the picture guides, but I just can't get it, I keep making a lollipop shape, not a ring!

Um, it's hard to describe and took me a while to get it, but (without having my crochet to hand so trying to remember) you make as if to make a slip knot but instead of tightening it you sort of hold it, then chain 2 or whatever then crochet over the ring.

Have you tried you tube vids? That's how I got it in the end.
