sewing machine - what was the first thing you made?

I went on a get to know your sewing machine course today and finally know how to thread and use my machine.

It's all very exciting and I want to make everything.

I think I am going to make a simple cushion cover first, then a drawstring bag.

What was the first thing that you ever made using your machine?

The first thing I ever made on a sewing course was a reversible top for my dd. Sounds fancy, but as it wa a wrap-around top that buttoned at the shoulders, it was in fact made of only two pieces (one green, one blue), some interfacing, and four buttons.

The first thing I ever made entirely on my own (ie using my own machine, and not on any course) was a gaudy pair of casual trousers for dh. He wears them very often, and when I see them on him I still can't quite believe I made them.

It is really is a buzz using something you have made yourself!

Haven't made anything in ages, only repairs. Must get going again.

Have fun!

I plunged right in as it was the day before Hallowe'en and made a pig costume without a pattern for DD1. It held together for the entire Hallowe'en thing in school and later for trick or treating. I'm not brave enough to make anything for myself or anything that would have to go in the washing machine.

Some bunting for my friends new baby girl. It was very simple to make but I was so proud !

Wow, clothes and everything! I am planning on starting on lots of things with straight lines.

Clothes patterns just look so confusing!

The first thing I made with the 1960s Singer sewing machine I have stolen borrowed from my MIL was Shepherds outfits for the boys to wear in their sunday school nativity.

I have since progressed to a patchwork cushion for DD's room and she also wants bunting to match.

I have bought some long socks to make them sock monkeys for Christmas too.

The first ever thing I made when I got it (teenager) was prob a patchwork cushion cover, which is still around somewhere.

When I dug it out recently I think I made a little purse made out of demin scrap and a lining. Now working on some shopping bags...

Would love to try some clothes, but working up the courage.

First thing I made was a mei tai to carry my DS3 in. It was all straight lines so pretty easy to do.

i cant really remember but i think it was a pink fersey dress with a gathered skirt in the 80's. made loads since then including 30 pairs of bikinis. sadly none of them look fab on me anymore.

I actaully did get around to making a cushion cover the other day.
It was so satisfying and quick to make.

Need more fabric now.

bO its the beginning of an addiction now if you start to collect fabric. How many suitcases will your loft hold?

I was trying to answer the OP's question and realised I can't remember a time when I didn't know how to sew! I grew up using my mum's (originally my great-grandmother's) 1882 Jones then graduated to my own 1900ish Singer (until I broke it ). I now have my own Janome which seems pretty miraculous (it can do zig-zag!!!).
My brother can sew too & when he was a little boy and given his first pedal car he used to turn it upside-down and pretend it was a sewing machine. Funny how you can take these things for granted.
