adding an elasticated waist to joggers - please help the unskilled!

I just bought my son a few pairs of jogging bottoms as he is starting school in September and will have no uniform and I wanted clothes he can manage himself. However, I foolishly bought drawstring ones and would rather they had an elasticated waist. Is there any way of elasticating the waists without a sewing machine? I bought them online and it would be a real faff to send them back etc etc. thanks!

1.Safety pin elastic to draw string cord.

  1. Pull draw string cord through trouser waistband thereby pulling elastic through same channel.
  2. Knot elastic securely at correct tension.

  1. Unpin draw string cord from elastic.

You should use a second safety pin to pin lose end of elastic to the part where you start.
