Dd1 and 5 have decided that we want to make a patchwork quilt!

I do a fair bit of basic sewing - have a basic machine, make curtains, cushion covers, tablecloths etc .... have made basic shift dresses for the girls. Can follow a pattern.

Dd1 loves sewing, has made a teddy for all of her baby cousins when they were born, likes making all sorts of things, is also a good knitter.

We're a crafty family - make our own cards all the time etc, dd1 has won several art competitions.

But we have never quilted!

Can anyone recommend a book/website/etc which could teach us the basics so we can make a quilt for dd1's new bedroom? We've been saving fabric that matches the colour scheme but we just don't knwo how to start!!!

thanks a lot!

I don't know how close to London you are but there is a fab exhibition on at the V&A in London all about quilting complete with workshops for beginners. They are also selling a lovely range of books and materials.

You could learn to quilt and have a fab day out at the same time

If you're looking for patterns I really recomment this book by Jan Mullen. It's very easy but looks intricate. You will need to buy a rotary cutter and a ruler but the book explains how to use them.

I recommend Kids' Quilts in a Weekend which has lovely projects suitable for beginners, which you can adapt for your colour scheme.

Also the website Moda Bake Shop has lots of free patterns with detailed instructions.

Patchwork & Quilting magazine has a regular quilting for juniors section and they also have a regular section outlining basic techniques each month - Smiths sell it and its a lot less than a book! Good luck - I'd also say that given your sewing experience you'll walk making a basic quilt so you can really let rip with colour choices etc. I am desparate to get to the V&A exhibition - I have the catalogue and it looks wonderful. There is a basic 'how to' book accompanying it too - its avaialable on Amazon.
