Wooden numbers - can I use felt tip pen on them?

I've got some plain wooden numbers that I want to use on some birthday cards. I was going to paint them but have ran out, didn't realise until I got home!

Would it work ok if I coloured them in felt tip pen? I don't want to run the risk of ruining them as I can't easily get back into town to pick more up, and I need one card done by Friday.

Has anyone tried this? Thanks!

i do remember using felt tip on wood as a kid...it will definitely work, but the colours will not be as bright because the ink soaks into the wood a bit. so if you are using bright red or black for instance, you should get a good result, but yellow or light green would not show up very well. it would look like stained wood (which could be a good effect?)

ooh, here's a crazy suggestion....what about trying some nail polish? depends on what colours you have of course, but it would work a lot better than felt tip....or felt tip with clear nail polish over it to brighten it up?

good luck!

Thanks curlimum I did think of nail polish, but mine are all black, dark blue, dark purple or glittery!!! The cards are for my Mum and MIL so something a bit more 'normal' is needed!

I've had a go at colouring the back of one of them with DS felt tips and so far it looks ok, although a bit lighter as you said. I think I'll seal them with glittery nail polish

Thanks for your help!
