ds (5) has home first ever school craft project. he has to make a model of his favourite book character. Its to be no bigger than a shoe box

ds has choosen Mr Tickle!!!!!!

now I am naff at this, but thought I (or rather ds) could do a balloon/paper mache effort for the body (maybe with orange crepe paper??? Is this a good idea.

Need ideas for extra long bendy arms (thought of pipe cleaners but they are very thin - have googled and cant find really thick ones).

Also any idea's for feet that will hold body and long arms securly (playdoh? how would we attach to body?).

HELP!

Make whole thing out of air dry clay and then let him paint it all and you add the face...remember, it is not worth you starting down the slippery slope of trying to out do others modelling expertise!!! Teachers love a good giggle at those you can just tell haven't had much child input!!!!{grin}

Alao, make small..don't get too grandiose. Small is easier to make and stand etc...

never thought about doing the whole thing in clay (tried wet clay once with him once and never again - what a mess and he was too young for it!)

Could maybe get him to cover a tennis size ball with clay for the body so he's got a guide and its not too heavy.

Not planning on helping too much, can remember at nursery, only project he ever got was an easter bonnet competition, we made a (very very rough) top hat from yellow card which he helped draw round a bowl and cutout and stick together, but then decorated entirely himself with paints/stamps and cotton wool/glue.

It was a brillant mess, but he won even though there were masses of very professional looking hats. He was soooooo proud of winning, can still remember his face when I picked him up!

Why not use clay but on a board laying flat so sort of 2D but not...if you get my drift!! So it is a mr tickle scene...he could even paint in a tree and some clouds. x

what about making it out of felt? possibly a little bit of sewing in that.

what about a foam egg and glueing tissue paper all over it. then draw aon eyes and mouth and push some pipe cleaners thru for arms and legs

strips of orange card folded into concertina for arms?

yes agree with nora, you could use basic paper plate for body
