Ummmmmm, not sure. With shirt buttons, say, you couldn't tell, surely? A friend made me a cardigan for my DS (all recycled) with vintage buttons and they're obvious from the shape and design.
Why do they need to be vintage?

You need to go and find the m'netter called Vintage Violet, she sells buttons that would suit I'm sure.

If you want to be absolutely sure that they really are old, then you need to buy them on the original card. Usually lots on ebay. The haberdashery dept. at Liberty in London sometimes have some too. Otherwise, it's just the look and feel of the things - you need to be a button afficionado!

Go to a jumble sale (do they have those any more?). Buy some old clothes. Cut the buttons off. Vintage! Simples.

depends on your jumble sale, you will need to choose your area carefully to have any chance of vintage over stained George

Shameless self promotion, but I also sell vintage buttons (and other haberdashery stuff). My site is www.islaybower.etsy.com.

If you can't find what you're after, feel free to email me on islaybower [at] gmail [dot] com - I've got tons of buttons from various eras.
