World book day costume - anyone know how to make

roll top boots for an 8 yr old boy? He wants to go as Tom from Beast Quest - baggy trousers, long tunic with laces (no idea how to do that either), sword, shield, belt (we have the last three items!)

Long pair of brown/black socks
Sew piece of material round top of socks (so that bottom of piece of material is sewn round top of sock
Fold/roll down piece of material?

Oh yes good idea. What would he wear on his feet though? When he goes outside I mean.
