I can't crochet!

I have tried to learn, from books with pictures, about five times now - each time consisting of a whole evening of me concentrating on not getting ht up! I can do the chain, but the chain looks twisted, no matter what I do, and I can't do the second line. There's no hope for me, id there? I so want to make the lovely things in my crochet books!

Any tips gratefully received...

I'm a left hander too. My mum gave me a book to teach me crochet and I couldn't work it out as it was all for right handers.
