Making and attaching curtains

I'm thinking of making a pair of lined curtains, but I don't quite follow the construction. I've been reading the guide to making them on Channel 4's website. The bit that confuses me is how you attach curtains rings to the heading tape - what is the device or product that goes in between? There aren't any hook style curtains in this flat to refer to and I just can't visualize how they go together.

Also, if anyone knows any good online guides to making lined curtains, that would be really helpful!

I'll try my best to word this to be understood, but bear with me, a bit brain dead ATM but ask if anything not clear

you buy packs of plastic curtain hooks, they look like little white, or clear squashed spirals with a barb on the outer end

thread barbed end into the curtain tape...... the bit where you get 2 or 3 rows of parrallel looped stitches (like) showing through,...choose loops at height to suit legth you want curtain to be......& so that the barbed end points towards hem when fully threaded through until center of hook is on stitch loops.....then hook barbed end onto small loops on your curtain rings..
good luck

Thank you so much for this - I get the things you mean! In the end, I went to the library and a curtain shop at the weekend, where I saw the little hooks you describe. Am contemplating having a go at making some in the next few days, but I'm a little nervous about cutting up my lovely material and getting it wrong! However, the books I've borrowed explain things pretty clearly; we'll see how it goes...
